When playing any Game Mode solo, or during Free Roam, you can press the D-Pad Down Button to activate the Rewind feature. Holding the Rewind button allows you to Rewind to a further location.
You cannot access this feature when playing on a single Joycon controller.

When to Use Rewind
Dodge a Blue Shell
The Blue Shell is a devastating item, especially if you're holding first place as it can instantly ruin your lead. Fortunately, one of the most effective, but most likely unintended, uses of the Rewind technique is to use it before a Blue Shell hits you to return to a previous location while keeping all your momentum.
To use Rewind to dodge a Blue Shell, press D-Pad Down immediately after the Blue Shell stops above you and prepares to strike. This is only available when playing singleplayer.
How to Dodge the Blue Shell (Spiny Shell)
Redo a Failed Run
Rewind is very useful when you failed to reach a section of a track. Use it to go back to your original position and redo a specific section! Mistakes may happen, and the Rewind can help fix that.
To Memorize or Practice the Track
Using Rewind in singleplayer mode is a great way to get used to the tracks you'll participate in multiplayer. Practice the fastest way to finish the race and secure the top with your new found skills!
What is Rewind?
Returns to Your Previous Location
Rewind is a new mechanic to the Mario Kart games that allows players in singleplayer matches to return to a previous position and re-attempt sections of a track that they might have trouble with, such as a multi-trick maneuver.
Other Players are Not Affected
Remember that the Rewind function only applies to you, and it doesn't affect the other players. Make sure to use this function wisely and not let others overtake you!
Can Only Be Used in Free Roam or Single-Player
This feature is not available in online matches, and can only be enjoyed in singleplayer and Free Roam.
