For all players launching Mario Kart World for the first time, Smart Steering is turned on by default. While this setting is great for beginners, it has its downsides, such as the limitation of reaching only up to the Super Mini Turbo.
Once you get used to the techniques that can be used for easier steering, such as drifting, it is highly recommended that you turn this setting off.
Should You Use Smart Steering?
This setting will cause your vehicle to accelerate continuously without requiring additional input. We recommend turning this setting off because, although you could still hit the brakes, it might be more efficient to simply tap the accelerator during tight turns.
How to Change Controls
The Auto-Use Item feature will automatically decide when is the best time to use an item, and this may not be the same as what the player intends. We recommend turning this setting off so you can decide when to use an item.
List of All Items

It is generally recommended that this feature is turned off unless you want to use your Joy-Con as a steering wheel. This will prevent unwanted steering and restrict other inputs, making the directional sticks the only source of input.
Gyro: Should You Use Tilt Controls?
These settings are subject to variation based on individual preferences. It is recommended that you experiment with the various settings available and select the one that best suits you.

The minimap is your guide, showing you when to expect sharp turns. This feature also tracks all your opponents in real-time, so it's best to keep this setting on.
Leave this setting on to transform your character into a different outfit by picking up the Dash Food item. Leaving this setting on off prevents the transformation, which prevents that outfit's unlock if you haven't obtained it yet.
Dash Food Locations and Outfits Unlocked

To change the settings, press X while you're in the kart selection menu. This will take you to the settings menu.

You can also access the settings menu while in free roam. To do so, press the + button to pause the game, and then press X to open the settings menu.
