There are four difficulty settings in Mario Kart that affect how quick the karts are. See how all the difficulty affects the game, the difference between each difficulty, and the best difficulty for you.
List of Contents

The unit “cc” stands for cubic centimeters and basically means how big or powerful an engine is. This setting is typically known as engine classes and, at higher engine classes, makes all the karts in a race go faster.
Increasing the difficulty makes controlling the carts through sharp corners and precise shortcuts much more difficult due to the speed you get. It is heavily recommended to start using the brakes on higher difficulties to aid in taking sharper corners.
Not only do higher engine classes increase the difficulty by making it harder to control the karts due to how fast they are, but it also affects how good the AI is at driving, and how aggressive they are at using items.

200cc is a new engine class that debuted in Mario Kart 8 and is the hardest difficulty in the Mario Kart series to date. There is no confirmation on whether 200cc will be a playable difficulty or whether it is an unlockable in the game.
There is a chance that this engine class will be added at a later date, similar to when and how it was added in Mario Kart 8!

150cc is the highest, but is also the standard difficulty of the game. It is the most preferred or played engine class in the game when playing online in the previous games. Even the alternate engine class, Mirror Mode, defaults to 150cc.
At this level of difficulty, all the character stats and driving techniques matter.

If you're unfamiliar with Mario Kart but are a fan of racing games, we recommend practicing the controls and the feel of the game at 100cc. If you are a beginner to the series and genre overall, it's recommended to play at 50cc until you're confident enough to speed up your gameplay to 100cc.
