New Items

Item Effect
Coin Shell Coin Shell NEW When thrown, coins will appear in its trail allowing you to collect coins as a boost.
Ice Flower Ice Flower NEW For a while, each press of the L Button throws an ice ball. Karts hit by an ice ball will freeze and slow down.
Hammer Hammer NEW When thrown, the hammer will parabolically fly forward and can hit your opponents. After they are thrown, they remain as physical obstacles in the track.
Question Block Question Block NEW For a time, every time you press the L button, you can get several coins that will spawn.
Kamek Kamek NEW Transform everyone except you to look like the same character.
Dash Food Dash Food NEW Gives you a boost of speed and can also change your character into another outfit.

New items have been introduced in the Nintendo Direct. Some of these items like the Feather used to be available only on Battle Mode in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Banana Banana Spins the karts that drive over it.
Change from Previous Games:
Will immediately attach to the back of your Kart.
Triple Bananas Triple Bananas Three Bananas will orbit your kart that you can throw in front of your Kart.
Dash Mushroom Dash Mushroom Gives your kart a short movement speed boost.
Change from Previous Games:
Faster speed boost.
Triple Dash Mushrooms Triple Dash Mushrooms Three Dash Mushrooms will orbit your kart.
Change from Previous Games:
Faster speed boost.
Golden Dash Mushroom Golden Dash Mushroom For a period of time, use a Dash Mushroom with each press of the L Button.
Change from Previous Games:
Now more commonly spawns from Item Boxes.
Mega Mushroom Mega Mushroom Use to enlarge yourself and gain advantage over your rivals by crushing them.
Change from Previous Games:
Stays in big size if shocked.
Green Shell Green Shell Travels in a straight line and knocks over the first kart it hits.
Change from Previous Games:
Will immediately attach to the back of your Kart. Now knocks your opponent forward.
Triple Green Shells Triple Green Shells Three Green Shells will orbit your kart that you can launch in a straight line.
Red Shell Red Shell Homes in on the kart in front of you and knocks it over.
Change from Previous Games:
Will immediately attach to the back of your Kart. Now knocks your opponent forward.
Triple Red Shells Triple Red Shells Three Red Shells will orbit your kart that you can launch toward the opponent in front of you.
Spiny Shell Spiny Shell Homes in on the lead kart and knocks it over.
Fire Flower Fire Flower For a while, each press of the L Button throws a fireball. Karts hit by a fireball will spin.
Boomerang Flower Boomerang Flower Throws a boomerang up to three times. Any karts hit will spin.
Change from Previous Games:
The item now runs on a timer instead of having 3 set boomerangs to throw.
Bullet Bill Bullet Bill Transform into Bullet Bill for a while. You will speed along the course automatically, knocking over any karts you hit.
Change from Previous Games:
Now only pushes other players away instead of completely knocking them over.
Bob-omb Bob-omb Explodes after a certain period of time or when a kart hits it. Karts caught in the blast will spin or be knocked over.
Change from Previous Games:
When a Bob-omb attached to the back of your Kart gets hit, you will no longer be affected by the blast.
Super Horn Super Horn Emits a large sonic blast to knock away nearby karts and items.
Change from Previous Games:
All affected players now drop their items when hit.
Coin Coin Gives you two coins. The more coins you have, the faster your kart becomes.
Change from Previous Games:
Individual coins give less of a boost.
Boo Boo Your kart will turn invisible for a certain time, and allows you to pass through obstacles like Bananas. Additionally, it also steals an item from another player.
Blooper Blooper Shoots ink at all karts in front of you, obscuring their vision for a while.
Feather Feather Use to jump over and dodge obstacles and attacks!
Change from Previous Games:
You can now access special parts of the course with a Feather.
Super Star Super Star Makes you invincible for a while. Your speed is also increased, and any kart you hit will be knocked over.
Change from Previous Games:
More rare to get from Item Boxes. Speed boost is lowered.
Lightning Lightning Lightning strikes all opponents and destroys any items that they're holding. They'll also be shrunk and slowed down for a while.
Change from Previous Games:
Only targets opponents in front of you instead of all opponents. Will no longer spawn if one player already holds the item.

Piranha Plant

Item Effect
Piranha Plant Piranha Plant A Piranha Plant will be attached to the front of your vehicle for a while. When it bites, your kart will also get a small boost.

The Piranha Plant item no longer shows up as an option when picking up an item box. Although there hasn't been an official statement about its removal, the item was likely removed to avoid confusion, considering that the Piranha Plant is now a playable character.

Fake Item Box

Mario Kart World - Piranha Plant ItemFake Item Box
Effect The Fake item Box is designed to resemble a standard item box, but with the symbol inverted. Upon use, it emits a deceptive item box that disables any player who comes into contact with it.

The Fake Item Box has also been removed and is no longer available in item boxes. It is probable that these items are removed due to balance issues, as players have become adept at identifying a fake item box from a real one.
