Helicopters usually drop Item Boxes in specific places at Free Roam. Unfortunately, unlike UFOs, they don't descend when you follow them.

From Pauline's place, cross the water bridge and keep going until you see a P Switch next to some railings.

Head to Bowser Castle and go down to find the P Switch.

Being able to ride a Helicopter is rare. You have to look for the P Switches near Pauline's place and Bowser Castle to spawn and ride one!

Helicopter Front POV

You can only ride the Helicopter using the P Switches for a limited time. However, thanks to Photo Mode, you can view it from all angles. It even has the face of a dog with its tongue sticking out if you view it from the front.

Mario Bros. Circuit → Toad Factory
Halfway through lap 2, go left.

You can abuse the Helicopter's features by being fast and invincible at the same time during online matches. Race in the tracks mentioned above to easily access a Helicopter.
