Mario Kart World introduced exciting new features and changes from the previous title, Mario Kart 8. Check out the list of new and returning features, as well as the all-new techniques introduced in Mario Kart World!

Mario Kart World introduces three new techniques that players can use to get ahead of their opponents.

A new feature called Charge Jump will be added to the game. To perform a Charge Jump, hold down the drift button while driving straight. Releasing the drift button causes the player to jump, which can be used to dodge environmental hazards and enemy attacks, as well as perform other techniques.

Players can now ride on rails or ropes. They will know when they are on them because the wheels of their karts will spark blue, similar to when players drift for a mini-turbo boost. Since rails are often positioned at a higher elevation, players will usually need to use charge jumps to reach them.

Players can now drive across walls by charging and jumping straight toward a wall. Turbo boosts charge much faster on walls than during regular drifting, allowing players to reach the coveted Ultra Mini-turbo state much faster.

In Mario Kart 8, Grand Prix mode features players competing in a series of four courses, called cups.
In Mario Kart World, however, players must now race to the next course, which is part of the competition.
The maximum number of players allowed to participate in each race has been doubled from the previous title, increasing from 12 to 24 players. Having more drivers on each course could make the races more dynamic and interesting.

With the rewind function, players can return to a previous position and re-attempt sections of a track that they might have trouble with, such as a multi-trick maneuver. This feature will be available in live races, but keep in mind that time flows normally for the other players, so use it wisely.

Courses will now have day and night versions with added weather conditions. These conditions can affect how players race; for example, rain can make the tracks slippery.

The majority of the Open World in Mario Kart will be explorable, with the developers claiming that you can drive virtually everywhere in the world. Locations will be divided into regions, and races will happen all over the world. During Free Roam, players can meet up with their friends and challenge them to races with customized rulesets.

A new mode called the Knockout Tour is introduced, with one rule: characters must reach a certain placement at the next checkpoint to continue the race. Failure to do so will result in elimination.

Some features from Mario Kart 8 and previous titles will return, though some will be changed or altered.

The titular mode of the series, Grand Prix, returns with the goal of earning the most points across four courses. However, players must also race toward the next course, adding an extra layer of difficulty.

Players can participate in time trials, where they are the sole racer on a track. This makes it a great mode for practicing techniques and lining. In online mode, players can also compete against ghosts, which are non-interactive but can serve as guides for improving on a track if they have a better lap time.

Players can compete against one another with customizable rulesets tailored to their preferences. Team Battles are making a return, with up to four teams competing for victory.

This is a game mode with different win conditions. Rather than trying to win a race, players compete against each other to complete a different goal. Confirmed returning battle modes include Balloon Battle, where players try to pop each other's balloons, and Coin Runner, where the goal is to collect the most coins.
Previous Items are returning, which can be picked up to help the player win their race. Functionality for some items may change, similar to Thunder, where racers under roofs can't be hit by it, and only affects other races ahead of the user. It will also induce the rain weather mechanic, making roads more slippery.

Kart customization has been replaced with a simpler new mechanic. Rather than customizing their kart from scratch, players will now select a kart from a selection of karts, each with different stats.

Some courses from previous titles will return, such as Toad's Factory. These courses may not be exact replicas of their previous versions, as the maps may have been altered to accommodate the new techniques.
Although the core mechanics of the existing techniques will remain the same, some changes to the gameplay will be implemented to keep things interesting.
The new techniques allow players to perform tricks for speed boosts, which can be performed one after another if certain conditions are met.
Although the limit for coins has increased to 20, they still function the same way. Players need to collect them to increase their kart's speed.
Splitscreen is returning, allowing up to four players to race on a single system. For wireless play, a total of eight players can participate, with a limit of two players per system.
Tracks that have an anti-gravity mechanic that allows players to drive on other surfaces are absent from the game.

In Mario Kart 8, players could fully submerge their karts underwater and continue racing. This differs from Mario Kart: World in which parts of the karts transform in order to drive on the water's surface.
The Traction stat is currently not shown, as stats are displayed when choosing which kart to use during character selection. It is unclear at this time whether the traction stat will be included in the game.
While Battle Mode is returning, some modes were not mentioned in the last Nintendo Direct event. Only Balloon Battle and Coin Runners were announced. There was no mention of whether Shine Thief, Renegade Roundup, or Bob-Omb Blast will be making a return.
