List of Contents

God of War Ragnarok's Valhalla DLC was released on December 12, 2023 for PS5 and included with the PC release by default. It functions as a free playable epilogue that follows Kratos and Mimir after the conclusion of the main story.
Valhalla contains unique dialog and cutscenes adding closure to Kratos' journey throughout the God of War series, from the battles in his homeland to his latest adventures through the world of Norse myth in God of War 2018 and Ragnarok.
Does God of War Ragnarok Have DLC?

Valhalla is a replayable combat-focused game mode that challenges players to make the most of their limitations without the help of the armor and upgrades they earned throughout the campaign.
They will travel through a maze of challenge rooms earning currency to buy permanent upgrades that will last over multiple runs through the gauntlet of Valhalla.

Once the game is fully updated, the God of War Ragnarok Valhalla DLC is accessible from the main menu.
Simply select the Valhalla option to launch straight into a fresh session of Valhalla (or a suspended session, if you saved in the middle of a run).

Though Valhalla can be accessed at any time once installed, we highly recommend to play only after completing the main story.
This is because Valhalla takes place after the story's ending, and will directly reference events from the story, including the ending to the main quest and the fates of different characters.

In terms of combat, Valhalla also assumes fairly advanced knowledge of God of War Ragnarok's combat mechanics, so it's best to go in after practicing your skills on the campaign enemies and bosses.
Combat System Explained: All Techniques and Changes

Valhalla is a completely separate mode from the main story, and does not use the armor or upgrades from the campaign, including in New Game Plus.
Instead, the cosmetic appearance of armor and upgrades can be unlocked to allow you to customize Kratos' appearance in Valhalla, working just like Transmog.

After the introductory mission, you will enter Valhalla proper, which consists of entering multiple Challenge Rooms full of enemies.
Clearing a Challenge room unlocks a reward chest that unlocks various kinds of upgrades to your weapons. The upgrades can include special perks for a weapon, new Runic Abilities, and custom buffs for your skills.

Since the rewards are randomly assigned, you may need to master multiple styles of play or weapons to succeed in Valhalla, playing in a way that best suits the rewards and buffs you have access to.

The combat can be difficult in Valhalla, and if you die in a Challenge Room, you will be returned to the gate of Valhalla, and any temporary bonuses purchased from the Sanctuary during the run will be erased. Permanent bonuses will remain.

Between Challenge Rooms, you will encounter safe Sanctuaries based on the Nine Realms.
These rooms have no combat but include various features that allow you customize your experience and earn upgrades to help the current run of Valhalla.
Some of the upgrades can be unlockable chests with permanent rewards, the ability to change Challenge Rooms or set their Rewards, or healing bonuses you can pay for with currency earned during the run.

During the run you will eventually encounter Valhalla's Chosen, special enemies that unlock the way to the next layer of the realm.
Chosen are usually tougher than normal enemies, and Challenge Rooms that feature the Chosen will be clearly signaled.

After defeating a Chosen, the Ascending Sands in the next Sanctuary will be unlocked.
Entering the Sands brings you the Proving Grounds, where you will encounter a powerful boss. Defeating this Boss grants access to the Upper Layer of Valhalla, where you can complete a story quest.
| Valhalla Story Quest | Description |
|---|---|
| The Invitation | An introductory quest showing Kratos' arrival at Valhalla. |
| Homecoming | The first true run of Valhalla, where Kratos encounters some familiar faces. |
| The Host | Kratos journeys further into Valhalla, meeting the one who invited him to the mysterious realm. |
| The Work, Part 1 | Realizing he is not yet ready, Kratos devotes himself to preparation through battle. |
| The Work, Part 2 | Kratos continues to process his memories, thoughts and choices, confronting insights he did not have in the past. |
| The Work, Part 3 | Kratos comes to terms with his past and present, and makes a decision about his future. |
After completing each story quest, you will be returned to the Gate of Valhalla automatically to begin a new run. You will also be able to speak with NPCs to unlock new features of Valhalla to make future runs easier.
There are a total of six major story quests in Valhalla, and each may take multiple attempts to clear, given that you will be returned to the beginning of Valhalla if you die. Earning all of the above quests will clear the DLC's story component.
Valhalla DLC Quest Walkthrough

Valhalla is a roguelike experience that is designed for players to tackle multiple times, slowly unlocking new story missions as they ascend to the peak of Valhalla over and over again.

The Valhalla DLC is focused on combat and replayability, but if you prefer to just get the story, you can choose to lower the difficulty of combat. Choose the easiest mode, Show Me Will, to reduce the challenge level and make faster progress.
You can change difficulty settings at any time between runs if you change your mind later. Choosing harder difficulty settings increases the rewards, as well, allowing you to buy permanent upgrades more frequently.
Difficulty Settings Explained and Best Difficulty Level

Valhalla unlocks a new path for Kratos' Spartan Rage mode, as well as a cosmetic armor appearance that can be worn in New Game Plus, if players wish to return to the main story with new abilities.
