Is God of War: Ragnarok a Sequel?

Direct Sequel to God of War (2018)

Ragnarok - frozen Lake of Nine

God of War Ragnarok is a direct sequel to God of War (2018). The snowfall that began after Baldur's death was the start of the winter that precedes Ragnarok—a great battle against the gods and the end of the world.

How God of War (2018) Connects to God of War: Ragnarok

Snowfall After Baldur's Death

After Kratos snapped Baldur's neck near the end of God of War, it immediately triggered a snowfall. Mimir later explained that, while Kratos and Atreus were in Jotunheim, the snowfall already became the start of a great winter, the Fimbulwinter, which will span three summers.

Kratos shortly arrived at Brok and Sindri's workshop inside the Temple of Tyr and overheard them discussing about the weather. Brok mentioned that the cold weather isn't caused by a mere snow but by the "winter to end all winters", even explicitly calling it Fimbulwinter.

Once the three years of Fimbulwinter come to pass, Ragnarok begins, or as Mimir called it—the "end of the bloody world".

Atreus' Dream (Secret Ending)

Ragnarok - Thor and Kratos in God of War

The story of God of War (2018) ends after scattering Faye's ashes in Jotunheim and after Kratos and Atreus returns to the Realm Travel Room where they left Mimir. Players can continue exploring the game after they leave Tyr's temple (after the conversation with Brok and Sindri), whether through the door or the mystic gateway in the room, without an objective for The Journey or the main quests.

However, they can return to Kratos' home and interact with the bed inside to trigger a cutscene. The scene shows Kratos and Atreus waking up to a thunderstorm years later and finding a mysterious figure outside their house... wielding the Mjolnir.

The cutscene ends and goes back to the present day. Atreus tells Kratos that he had a dream where Fimbulwinter was ending and Thor came for them. He adds that the dream felt so real that it was like a vision of the future.
