Background Information

Kratos is the titular "God of War" and the primary protagonist of the God of War franchise. Hailing from Hellenic Sparta, Kratos was once a human that was granted powers by the Greek God of War Ares before being betrayed by the god.

This betrayal causes Kratos to wage a one-man war against the god, culminating in an eventual genocide of the Greek Pantheon of Gods that ended with the death of both Zeus and, seemingly, Kratos himself. Kratos would eventually return in God of War 2018, where he would venture out on a quest to spread his dead wife's ashes atop the highest peak in all the realms alongside his son Atreus.

Kratos Story Role

Old God, New Pantheon

God of War Ragnarok - Old God, New Pantheon
Due to his actions in ensuring the total collapse of the Greek Pantheon, Kratos finds himself as a stranger in a new land overseen by a different Pantheon of gods altogether. By the time of God of War 2018, he is unwillingly thrust into a series of battles against Baldur, one of the sons of the god Odin.

To both protect his son Atreus and ensure the completion of his quest – spreading his wife's ashes out over the highest peak in the realms – Kratos takes it upon himself to try and stop the mad god. This eventually leads to the death of Baldur and his nephews Magni and Modi, angering Baldur's mother Freya, as well as putting the eyes of Asgard onto Kratos and his son.

Atreus' Father

God of War Ragnarok - Atreus
Despite having decimated his own family back in Sparta in his youth, Kratos forms new bonds and a new family in the lands he finds himself in. He re-marries and has a son – named Atreus – who becomes his sole responsibility in life after the death of his wife Faye.

Unlike God of War 2018, Kratos may face different fatherly challenges beyond guiding the young child into adulthood due to the growth Atreus has had between the first game and Ragnarok.

Battle with Thor

God of War Ragnarok - Fight with Thor
In the previews released for God of War Ragnarok, it may be possible that Kratos will eventually get to fight against the powerful Thor, as was heavily hinted at in the epilogue of God of War 2018.

The circumstances that lead to the two butting heads are currently unknown, but may be possibly related to either Atreus' role in Ragnarok or simply Thor seeking revenge for the death of his brother Baldur.

War on Asgard

God of War Ragnarok - War Against Asgard
Ragnarok in Norse mythology is a cataclysmic event that tackles the defeat and destruction of Asgard at the hands of Loki and the Frost Giants (known as Jotun). As Kratos asks Atreus in the 2021 Playstation Showcase Trailer, Atreus (Loki) may eventually be forced to wage a war on Asgard itself, as per his mother's wishes.

Given Kratos' history of waging wars on a Pantheon with the help of Giants, it may be possible that Kratos would once again lead a war on Asgard alongside his son in a sequence of events that mirrors Kratos' war against Olympus.
