Background Information

Freya is the Vanir Goddess of "Love, Beauty, Fertility, Childbirth, Magic, War and Death". Although she was an ex-wife of the Aesir God Odin, and thus Queen of Asgard and by extension all other Aesir, Freya is actually of Vanir descent; becoming wedded to Odin in an effort to create a peace between the Vanir and Aesir.

With Odin, she would bore children including Baldur, whom she would "curse" with invulnerability, causing the man to become mad over being unable to "feel" anything.

Freya Story Role

Banished Queen

God of War Ragnarok - Banished Queen
As Mimir recounts in his many ramblings about the mythology of Asgard, Freya would eventually choose to turn her back on her marriage with Odin due to the Aesir's cruel ways.

This decision was met by feelings of betrayal and anger from Odin, causing him to banish Freya to Midgard and curse her so that she may be unable to leave the realm. Freya, between her banishment and the time when God of War 2018 would simply keep to her lonely section in the woods under the moniker Witch of the Woods.

Grieving Mother

Baldur Death
Prior to the events of God of War 2018, and still during her marriage to Odin, Freya would learn of a prophecy that foretold her son Baldur's death. Due to her love for her son, Freya was driven to curse Baldur with invulnerability in hopes that it may protect him from all threats. This would leave Baldur crazed due to the curse leaving him incapable of feeling anything physically.

Freya would refuse to lift this curse, prompting Baldur to seek out other means to remove it, ultimately resulting in conflicts and clashes against Kratos and Atreus years later. The curse is broken after he punches through a mistletoe placed on Atreus' chest, and is subsequently killed by Kratos when Baldur tries to kill Freya, leaving her to vow revenge on Kratos for Baldur's death.

Revenge on the Horizon

God of War Ragnarok - Freya Revenge
With the death of her son at the hands of Kratos – and by extension Atreus – Freya would likely try to fulfill her vow of revenge against the two throughout much of Ragnarok. During the 2021 Reveal Trailer, we see her using her shapeshifting powers to ambush the father and son duo.

Only time will tell whether Freya will get over her grief and become an ally to the pair, or remain a vengeful mother and become a dangerous enemy throughout the two's adventures.

The Mysterious Valkyrie

Ragnarok - The Mysterious Valkyrie (Freya)
Later in the story, Freya disguises herself as the mysterious valkyrie Vanadís, ambushing Kratos and Atreus at their home in Midgard after the latter returned from Ironwood.

After a confrontation between the three former allies where Freya gets the upper hand, she decides to let Kratos live as she needs his help to break free from Odin's binding curse in Vanaheim.
