Background Information

The son of the former Greek God of War, Kratos, Atreus is a young boy still learning the many different forms of combat and the way of life under the tutelage of his father.

Emotional, yet kind, Atreus has had several friends while growing up, many of which being people that he and his father had found throughout their travels across the realms on a mission to spread Atreus' mother's ashes. As a god himself, Kratos tries his best to raise Atreus for him to grow up to be unlike the cruel gods he has met in his life so far.

Atreus Story Role

Son of Kratos

God of War Ragnarok - Son of Kratos
Atreus' storyline in God of War 2018 game highlights his at times tenuous relationship with his father Kratos. It is made clear early on in the game that Atreus favors his mother more than Kratos, causing friction and conflict to exist between the two throughout the entire game.

Upon learning of his godhood and heritage, Atreus would grow arrogant, behaving in a manner that resembled the cruel gods that Kratos has encountered in his life. Atreus is eventually guided back to being "good", culminating in the two reconciling.

Constant Companion

God of War Ragnarok - Constant Companion
Aside from being the son of Kratos, Atreus also accompanies him throughout much of the entire journey in God of War 2018. Although unconfirmed, it is highly likely that this would be the same case in Ragnarok, particularly since Atreus has a larger role to play in the story due to his "intended" name being Loki, a name which plays significant parts in the prophesized Ragnarok itself.

Connection with Freya

God of War Ragnarok - Connection with Freya
In the events of the 2018 game, Kratos and Atreus would meet with the Witch of the Woods. They would grow a quiet relationship with the woman, who later on would be revealed to be a goddess named Freya, Odin's wife now banished into the lands of Midgard.

Things would come to a head, with Freya vowing revenge on the pair when the pair kill her son Baldur. Although not the one to swing the killing blow, Freya may hate Atreus as well because it was the mistletoe on Atreus' bow strap that rendered Baldur vulnerable once more.

God of Mischief

God of War Ragnarok - God of Mischief
Although the significance is still unknown to him or Kratos, their discovery by the end of God of War 2018 that Atreus' mother preferred to refer to him as Loki – the god chiefly responsible for the culmination of Ragnarok.

From old Norse mythology, Ragnarok is a legend that recounts the end of Asgard, Midgard, and all other realms. As of now, it is unknown if Atreus / Loki will play a similar role as in the legends in Ragnarok.

War on Asgard

God of War Ragnarok - War on Asgard
Being that his name is Loki, Atreus may lead a war against Asgard itself which leads to the death of each god in the pantheon. It is unknown what form this will take, although we can see one possible event in the myths occurring in-game from the 2022 Story Trailer.

Near the end of the trailer, we see Atreus shoot an arrow in the sky – one of the wolves to his right runs after it, causing the sky to split and darken. This is a visual representation of Skoll and Hati, Fenrir the Wolf's sons, coming to the end of their stories in Ragnarok as they devour the Sun and Moon respectively.
