GoW Ragnarok - How to Parry
Parrying is essential for staggering and quickly defeating enemies in God of War Ragnarok. Read on to learn how to parry, and types of parries, and which attacks are unblockable.

Types Of Parries

Basic Attack

Basic Attacks are usually sword swings or arm swipes from enemies. They do not have any indicator of when best to parry, unlike heavy attacks.

It is best to use the block button right before its attack hits.

Heavy Attack

Heavy attacks are signaled through the enemies having a yellow ring that gets wider as the attack gets nearer to hitting. Use that yellow ring as an indicator of when to block to get a perfect parry.

How to Parry

Press L1 Before an Enemy Attack

Parrying attacks can be done by blocking (PS4 - L1 Button.png) right before an enemy attack hits. When done successfully, Kratos will stagger the enemy, leaving them open to attacks.

If it is unsuccessful, Kratos will either take damage or block the attack. Blocking a Heavy Attack from an enemy will stagger Kratos instead.

Double Tap L1 For Attacks with a Blue Ring

When encountering an attack that emits a blue ring, double tap L1 instead of pressing it once. Kratos will the damage and stagger the enemy, making them open for attack.

Are there Unblockable Attacks?

Red Rings Signify Unblockable Attacks

Ragnarok - Recognize Unblockable Attacks
Whenever an enemy charges up for an attack and red ring surrounds it, it means that its next attack is unblockable. The only way to not get damaged is to sidestep or roll to safety.

Keep in mind that, enemies can follow their unblockables with basic or heavy attacks, which players can parry.
