What Kind of Character Are They? | ・Weapon skill is effective against flying and armored units, accelerates Special, grants buffs, and gives a guaranteed follow-up attack. ・Assist skill that repositions an ally and grants another action to unit. ・Exclusive A skill that allows him to counterattack regardless of range and will also grant buffs during combat. |
Might: 14 Range: 2 Accelerates Special trigger (cooldown count-1). Effective against flying and armored foes. If a movement Assist skill (like Reposition, Shove, Pivot, etc.) is used by unit or targets unit during turns 1 through 4, grants Special cooldown count-1 to unit and target ally or unit and targeting ally. (Once per turn only.) if unit initiates combat or is within 2 spaces of an ally, grants Atk/Spd/Def/Res+5 to unit during combat, and unit makes a guaranteed follow-up attack. |
Range: 1 Moves target ally to opposite side of the unit and grants another acton to unit. Grants Atk+ 6 to unit and Pair Up cohort (if any) for 1 turn and inflicts【Isolation】on unit and Pair Up cohort (if any) through their next action. (Does not stack). 【Isolation】 Target cannot use or be the target of Assist skills through its next action. (Target can neither use nor be the targer of skills like Dance and Sing, skills that neutralize penalties, like Restore and Harsh Command+, etc.) |
Cooldown Count = 3 Doubles damage dealt. Disables non-Special skills that "reduce damage by X%." |
Unit can counterattack regardless of foe's range. At start of combat, if unit's HP ≥ 25%, grants Atk+5 during combat, but after combat, if unit attacked, deals 5 damage to unit. |
At start of turn, if Special cooldown count is at its maximum value, grants Special cooldown count-1. |
Duo Skill |
---|
Inflicts Atk/Spd/Def/Res-5 on unit and allies within 2 spaces of unit through their next actions and grants 【Grand Strategy】 to those units. Grants the following effect to unit for 1 turn: "Foe cannot make a follow-up attack." 【Grand Strategy】 Grants bonus to Atk/Spd/Def/Res during combat = current penalty on each unit's stats x 2 for 1 turn. (Example: if unit has -7 penalty to Atk, grants Atk+14, for a net bonus of Atk+7.) Calculates each stat bonus independently. Unit's negative effects that last "through unit's next action" will remain in effect until this status (Grand Strategy) is neutralized. (Duo Skills can be used once per map by tapping the Duo button. Duo Skills cannot be used by units deployed using Pair Up.) |
Duel |
---|
If unit is 5★ and level 40 and unit's stats total less than 195, treats unit's stats as 195 in modes like Arena. (Higher-scoring opponents will appear. Stat total calculation excludes any values added by merges and skills.) |
Stat | Superboon/Superbane | IV Recommendation |
---|---|---|
HP (18) | ★★★☆☆ | |
Atk (14) | ★★★★★ | |
Spd (5) | ★★☆☆☆ | |
Def (10) | ★★★★☆ | |
Res (4) | ★★☆☆☆ |
◯ = Stat gains +4 with a superboon, ✕= Stat goes down by -4 with a superbane, - = No assets or flaws
See the IV Checker for All Units | Trait Fruits—How to Change IVs |
When using an Ascendant Floret, we recommend getting the next superboon if it fits the hero. If not, consider what stat your hero needs most.
We recommend a +Spd IV for Valentine's Chrom when committing to the Speedy build, as he will need every point of Spd he can get to avoid receiving follow-up attacks from the faster units in the game.
If committing to a different build such as a Tank build, +Atk would serve him better, as Chrom's Spd is in the middle area where he's faster than the slow units and slower than the fast units in the metagame.
As for his bane, Chrom's Res stat is sitting at 26, which is decent. He will still die from the harder hitting magic units in the game, but units with lower Atk stats may fail to get the KO. Thus, we recommend a -HP bane, as HP is the easiest stat to patch up with Legendary and Mythic blessing bonuses.
We recommend a +Spd IV for a Valentine's Chrom that is fully upgraded at +10 merges and max dragonflowers. The Speedy build prevents Chrom from receiving follow-up attacks from most of the fast units in the game, and this indirectly improves his tanking capability as well by receiving less attacks instead of less damage per attack that the Tank build would provide.

Deadeye
:
-
|
:
-
|
This is a speedy Valentine's Chrom build aimed at avoiding follow-up attacks from enemies. This also helps his offensive capabilities as he won't be completely reliant on the auto follow-up granted by his weapon.
:
Deadeye
:
-
|
:
-
|
This is a mixed phase build where Valentine's Chrom can initiate offense and KO opponents using his pre-charged Deadeye, and then revert to a tank role for the team. Close Counter is used instead of Close Salvo because recoil damage will harm his tanking potential. Mystic Boost 3 provides healing and, more importantly, shuts off Wrathful Staff effects, allowing Chrom to survive attacks from offensive staff units.
:
Deadeye
:
-
|
:
Guard 3
:
-
|
This build is for Aether Raids defense and allows Valentine's Chrom to defeat most of the common Far Save tanks in the metagame; notably, Ascended Fjorm. This build can defeat Ascended Fjorm even if her Ice Mirror is triggered.
:
Deadeye
:
-
|
:
-
|
This is a more supportive build for Valentine's Chrom aimed at applying Atk/Spd buffs to allies and reducing their Special cooldown upon using To Change Fate!, while being a counter to certain metagame units at the same time. Sturdy Impact is used to deny a foe's follow-up attack in case they survive the pre-charged Deadeye.
:
Deadeye
:
-
|
:
Fury 4
:
-
|
This build aims to activate Desperation by using Fury to deal recoil damage to Chrom. Using Destiny's Bow's guaranteed follow-up attack, Chrom will attack twice consecutively and activate Deadeye every round of combat. Heavy Blade is there to guarantee a Special cooldown charge even against foes with Guard effects, and to activate Deadeye multiple times per turn if Chrom has dancers on his team. You may replace the seal with Fury 3 if you wish.

Note: Stats bonuses from skills are not taken into account.
Valentine's Chrom is a ranged physical attacker (range = 2). Therefore, when not accounting for the Weapon Triangle, the amount of damage he deals will be equivalent to his Atk minus the foe's Def stat.
Valentine's Chrom comes with a Duo Skill which inflicts Atk/Spd/Def/Res-5 debuffs onto himself and allies within 2 spaces and grants 【Grand Strategy】to those units.
Grand Strategy is basically the same effect as Unity skills like Atk/Spd Unity and Atk/Res Unity, except it works for all stats instead of just two and does not grant the initial +5 bonus.
Grand Strategy stacks with Unity skills and weapons like Fallen Ike's Chaos Ragnell and Legendary Marth's special refnied Exalted Falchion!
Additionally, debuffs that last through unit's next action
applied on Chrom will persist until the 【Grand Strategy】 status itself is neutralized or removed. This allows Chrom to utilize the Unity effect in both phases!
Finally, using the Duo Skill grants Chrom a follow-up negation effect, further improving his own survivability!
Valentine's Chrom greeting the Sword Knight a Happy Valentine's Day.
Valentine's Chrom carries the unique red bow Destiny's Bow. It is a very powerful weapon with multiple effects that either function well independently, or work together with the rest of Chrom's kit to maximize his potential. Listed below are the weapon's effects:
1 | Accelerates Special trigger (cooldown count -1). |
---|---|
2 | Effective against flying and armored foes. |
3 | Grants Special cooldown count-1 to unit and target ally or unit and targeting ally if a movement Assist skill is used by unit or targets unit during turns 1-4. |
Chrom's unique assist To Change Fate! counts as a movement Assist skill, granting him and his target ally the Special cooldown reduction upon use!
When Valentine's Chrom uses his assist skill To Change Fate! on an ally, it will move the ally to Chrom's opposite side, grant both of them Atk+6, and allow Chrom to move again. It will also activate Destiny's Bow and grant both Chrom and the target ally -1 Special cooldown!
Reposition is easily one of the most useful assists in the game, and Chrom being able to move an ally and grant himself another action is a huge bonus that makes him unpredictable on the battlefield.
Valentine's Chrom also comes with the rare Special skill Deadeye. When triggered, it doubles the damage of Chrom's attack and ignores non-Special damage reduction skills like Spurn 3, the recently released Savvy Fighter 3, and even skills from allies like Flayn's Caduceus Staff and Elimine's Holy Ground.
What makes Deadeye extra powerful on Valentine's Chrom is that he can pre-charge it before his first combat! This is achieved through:
Valentine's Chrom also comes with a new variant of Close Counter named Close Salvo. It allows retaliation against melee foes like Close Counter does, but it also grants Atk+5 during combat.
The Atk+5 bonus is granted during both player phase and enemy phase. Chrom does not need to be attacked first to receive it.
However, if Chrom attacks during that specific combat, he will receive 5 damage after combat.
The self-damage effect occurs even if Chrom's attack dealt 0 damage.
Valentine's Chrom has a Spd stat of 27 which is in the awkward range where he is faster than the slow units in the metagame, but slower than the fast units in the metagame.
It is, however, a workable number which can be patched up with Spd-boosting skills such as Atk/Spd Push 4 and Atk/Spd Solo 4. Fully investing in Spd should deny follow-up attacks from some of the speedier units in the game.
Valentine's Chrom has a Res stat of 26 which isn't enough to survive the powerful magical units in the game.
Keep Chrom away from magical units and he will perform at his peak.
Arden | Ninja Zihark | Legendary Lilina | Fallen Dimitri |
Sonya | Brave Edelgard | Valentine's Gustav | Valentine's Lucina |
Valentine's Chrom works well with Near Save armored units as he can then drop Close Counter or Close Salvo in favor of a Spd-boosting skill like Atk/Spd Ideal 4.
Switching to a Spd-boosting skill allows Valentine's Chrom to potentially avoid follow-up attacks from speedier units. It also allows him to not completely rely on Destiny's Bow to perform a follow-up attack by outspeeding his foes.
From the examples we have shown here, using a green Near Save armored unit is preferred to be able to defeat blue units that are sure to be gunning hard to KO Valentine's Chrom.
Valentine's Chrom also works well with Galeforce units like Fallen Dimitri with his Ninja Naginata+ build or simply the regular Vengeful Lance + Flashing Blade sacred seal build.
Valentine's Chrom can use To Change Fate! to move the Galeforce unit closer to the enemy team and reduce their Special cooldown by 1 simultaneously thanks to Destiny's Bow.
As a small bonus, Valentine's Chrom can also assist in the clear attempt by taking another action and attacking the opponent thanks to the power of To Change Fate!
Valentine's Chrom also works well with high Atk units who can pre-charge their own Specials such as Legendary Lilina and Sonya. These units can use more powerful but higher cooldown Specials instead of quick, low cooldown Specials thanks to Chrom being able to reduce their cooldown counts.
In Legendary Lilina's case, she can pre-charge Gifted Magic using her tome, Studied Forblaze. However, with the aid of Destiny's Bow, To Change Fate!, and the Quickened Pulse sacred seal on Lilina or another way to reduce Special cooldown like Legendary Hector's Ostia's Pulse II, Lilina can instead use Blazing Flame and deal almost twice as much area-of-effect damage compared to Gifted Magic!
Brave Alm | Summer Byleth (F) | Brave Hector | Reinhardt |
New Year Alfonse | Zeke | Legendary Byleth (F) | New Year Reginn |
Valentine's Chrom is hard countered by Brave Hector completely due to many different factors:
Keep Valentine's Chrom away from Brave Hector at all costs.
Valentine's Chrom's low Res stat of 26 is prone to getting exploited by blue magical units like Reinhardt, Legendary Byleth (F), New Year Reginn, Hapi, and many more. One hit from any of them may be able to take Chrom out right away depending on investment levels.
Keep Valentine's Chrom away from blue magic units, or field a Far Save tank to protect him from them.
Valentine's Chrom can get walled by blue non-armored tank units like Zeke, Duessel, and New Year Alfonse. Their high defensive bulk and color advantage can prevent Chrom from knocking them out in combat.
Zeke deserves a special mention, as he has Holy Gradivus to retaliate and counterattack Valentine's Chrom. He also has Atk/Def Catch 4 which is activated and/or enhanced whenever Valentine's Chrom uses his Duo Skill.
Valentine's Chrom is vulnerable to the Null Follow-Up and Windsweep combo unless you inherit Null C-Disrupt 3 onto him. However, he is a bad user of the skill with his middling 26 Res being a clear weakness for offensive staff units to exploit.
Valentine's Chrom's low Spd will allow these combo users to outspeed him and perform a follow-up attack, and Chrom cannot retaliate with a counterattack in return. This should lead to Chrom falling in combat.
Common units who use this combo are all the different variants of Byleth and Brave Alm.

Valentine's Chrom has Deadeye, Close Counter, Close Salvo, and Time's Pulse 3 as inheritable skills.
Of these skills, Deadeye, Close Counter, and Time's Pulse 3 are the best for inheritance. Close Salvo can be a double-edged sword and is not meant for prolonged fights.
Through pre-inheritance, it is possible to inherit some combination of 2-3 skills from this list:
