Mario Kart World - All Returning Items and Changes

Fan favorite items such as the Bullet Bill, Boo, and more return once again in Mario Kart World! Check out how their effects have changed as well as the other items that are making their return!

List of Returning Items with New Effects

Item Effect
Banana Banana Spins the karts that drive over it.
Change from Previous Games:
Will immediately attach to the back of your Kart.
Bob-omb Bob-omb Throws a boomerang up to three times. Any karts hit will spin.
Change from Previous Games:
When a Bob-omb attached to the back of your Kart gets hit, you will no longer be affected by the blast.
Boo Boo For a while, each press of the L Button throws an ice ball. Karts hit by an ice ball will freeze and slow down.
Boomerang Flower Boomerang Flower Makes you invincible for a while. Your speed is also increased, and any kart you hit will be knocked over.
Change from Previous Games:
The item now runs on a timer instead of having 3 set boomerangs to throw.
Bullet Bill Bullet Bill For a while, each press of the L Button throws a fireball. Karts hit by a fireball will spin.
Change from Previous Games:
Now only pushes other players away instead of completely knocking them over.
Coin Coin When thrown, coins will appear in its trail allowing you to collect coins as a boost.
Change from Previous Games:
Individual coins give less of a boost.
Dash Mushroom Dash Mushroom Travels in a straight line and knocks over the first kart it hits.
Change from Previous Games:
Faster speed boost.
Fire Flower Fire Flower Shoots ink at all karts in front of you, obscuring their vision for a while.
Golden Dash Mushroom Golden Dash Mushroom Homes in on the kart in front of you and knocks it over.
Change from Previous Games:
Now more commonly spawns from Item Boxes.
Green Shell Green Shell Homes in on the lead kart and knocks it over.
Change from Previous Games:
Will immediately attach to the back of your Kart. Now knocks your opponent forward.
Lightning Lightning For a time, every time you press the L button, you can get several coins that will spawn.
Change from Previous Games:
Only targets opponents in front of you instead of all opponents. Will no longer spawn if one player already holds the item.
Red Shell Red Shell Gives your kart a short movement speed boost.
Change from Previous Games:
Will immediately attach to the back of your Kart. Now knocks your opponent forward.
Super Star Super Star An item that summons Kamek, whose magic causes strange things to occur, such as transforming obstacles and even other players!
Change from Previous Games:
More rare to get from Item Boxes. Speed boost is lowered.
Triple Dash Mushrooms Triple Dash Mushrooms Three Green Shells will orbit your kart that you can launch in a straight line.
Change from Previous Games:
Faster speed boost.

Banana

The Banana can be thrown or placed down to spin the Karts that drive over it.

The Banana will now be automatically trailed behind your Kart once you get it.

Bob-omb

Bob-omb is an item that can either be thrown to directly hit another racer or be simply dropped as a trap.

Previously, if you drop it and it instantly gets triggered by another racer, its blast will also affect you. In Mario Kart World, the Bob-omb's blast will not affect you when doing so, allowing you to freely use it as a deterrent.

Boo

Boo will turn your Kart invisible for a certain time, allowing you to pass through obstacles like Bananas without getting affected. Passing other racers while in this form will also let you to steal items from them.

The duration of this item's effect has been greatly reduced compared to before. Also, your Kart will turn semi-transparent instead of completely transparent for visual purposes.

Boomerang Flower

While this item is in effect, you will throw boomerangs that will spin other Karts that are hit. The maximum number of boomerangs that can be thrown was previously 3 but it has been increased to 4 in Mario Kart World.

Bullet Bill

Using this item will make you transform into Bullet Bill and speed along the course without requiring any input. Previously, any Karts you hit during this effect will knock them over but now it will simply push them away.

Coin

Using the Coin will give you two coins. Picking up coins grants you a slight speed boost. While this item has not been directly changed, the speed boost granted when picking up coins has been lessened, indirectly affecting this item.

Fire Flower

While this item is in effect, you will be able to throw fireballs that will spin other Karts that are hit. The maximum number of fireballs you can throw while this item is in effect was previously 10 but it has been reduced to 8 in Mario Kart World.

Golden Mushroom

While this item is in effect, you get a speed boost similar to a Mushroom's speed boost every time you press the L button.

Previously, this item was rather hard to come by but it is now a lot more common in Mario Kart World!

Green Shell

The Green Shell can either be used offensively by throwing it to knock over another racer or be used defensively by trailing it to deter items used on you.

Like the Banana, the Green Shell will now be automatically trailed behind your Kart once you get it.

Lightning

Instead of targeting every racer, it now only targets racers who are ahead of you. This provides not only you, but also the racers who are behind you, a chance to catch up!

However, the time needed to recover by the struck players has also been shortened compared to before, so be wary! The coins dropped by the struck racers have also been changed from 3 to now 2.

Lastly, only one person can hold this item at a time.

Mushroom

Using the Mushroom will give your Kart a short speed boost. The speed boost given by the Mushroom has been greatly increased in Mario Kart World.

Red Shell

Using the Red Shell will home in and knock over the racer in front of you.

Like the Banana and the Green Shell, the Red Shell will now be automatically trailed behind your Kart once you get it.

Super Star

While this item is in effect, you will be faster and be invincible. Any Karts you hit will also be knocked over.

The speed boost from this item has been decreased and it seems to be a lot rarer to get this item now.

Triple Mushrooms

Similar to the Mushroom, the Triple Mushrooms now have an increased speed boost.

List of Returning Items with No Changes

Item Effect
Blooper Blooper When thrown, the hammer will parabolically fly forward and can hit your opponents. After they are thrown, they remain as physical obstacles in the track.
Piranha Plant Piranha Plant A delicious snack that gives a boost of speed and may also change them into a different outfit.
Spiny Shell Spiny Shell For a period of time, use a Dash Mushroom with each press of the L Button.
Super Horn Super Horn Emits a large sonic blast to knock away nearby karts and items.
Triple Bananas Triple Bananas Three Bananas will orbit your kart that you can throw in front of your Kart.
Triple Green Shells Triple Green Shells Explodes after a certain period of time or when a kart hits it. Karts caught in the blast will spin or be knocked over.
Triple Red Shells Triple Red Shells Three Dash Mushrooms will orbit your kart.
