How to Farm Crops in Manor Lords

To start farming crops in Manor Lords, you need to build two essential buildings that work in tandem: the Fields and the Farmhouse. After building them, it's a matter of following the step-by-step process detailed here:

  1. Check the Fertility of the Land
  2. Build Fields and Farmhouse
  3. Assign Families in the Farmhouse
  4. Choose a Crop and Turn on Crop Rotation
  5. Purchase Farming Developments
  6. Process the Crops Accordingly

Check the Fertility of the Land

The very first thing that you should do is to check the fertility of the land and look for the best location to farm crops.

To check for fertility, go to the Construction Menu (Press C) and check out the various clickable overlays on the right. You'd want to check Emmer (Wheat), Flax, Barley, and Rye.

Crop You Want Planted Fertility Overlay Name
Wheat Emmer Fertility
Flax Flax Fertility
Barley Barley Fertility
Rye Rye Fertility

Build Fields and Farmhouse

Once you have found the perfect spot, start constructing fields and farmhouse. It is required to have both these buildings for farming to work or else it just won't.

We suggest putting the field and farmhouse next to each other so families can easily transport any harvests into the farmhouse the fastest way possible. In case your farmhouse is far from a field due to fertility constraints, just make sure they are connected with a road.

The Field is a Flexible Plot

The Field is considered a flexible plot, so you can freely dictate its square area. The game will also estimate the size of the plot in "Morgen". Morgen is just a measurement of area equivalent to about 2/3 of an acre.

Assign Families in the Farmhouse

Manor Lords - Farmhouse Assigned Family

Next, make sure you have assigned a family to the farm. With our testing, a single family can plow, sow, and harvest a 0.6 Morgen field easily. Once it goes over that measurement, it is better to add another family to the farmhouse.

Choose What Crop to Plant and Turn on Crop Rotation

Manor Lords - Crop Rotation

Once the field and farmhouse are set, it's time to choose the crop that you want to plant and turn on crop rotation for maximum efficiency. We suggest following our Crop Rotation Guide for strategies on how to properly rotate crops in Manor Lords!

Process the Crops Accordingly

▲ Barley is processed into Malt in a Malthouse.

When choosing crops, you will be prompted to choose between four crops, each with its own purpose and end product:

Crop Resource
Wheat Processed into Flour to make Bread.
Rye Processed into Flour to make Bread.
Barley Processed into Malt to make Ale.
Flax Processed to make Linen.

Wheat, Barley, and Flax are the main ones you'll be able to plant freely. To unlock Rye, you need to get the Rye Cultivation development first.

How to Farm Livestock in Manor Lords

Crops are not the only thing being farmed in Manor Lords - we also have animals or livestock that produce their produce. It is a bit more straightforward than planting crops, so just follow the process here and you're good:

  1. Build a Sheep Farm and Pasture
  2. Assign a Family
  3. Purchase the Sheepbreeding development
  4. Get Your Two Starting Sheep
  5. Trade Extra Sheep in the Livestock Trading Post

Build a Sheep Farm and Pasture

Unlike crops, farming livestock is pretty straightforward in Manor Lords. You only have one commodity: Sheep. Sheep provide Wool for your settlement which is spun into a Yarn and made into clothes. Take note that shearing Wool from Sheep is prohibited during Winter.

How to Get Sheep and How to Use

The Pasture is a Flexible Plot

The Pasture in Manor Lords is a flexible plot, so you can freely dictate the size of the pasture and in turn, the space inside it. The game will tell you how much pasture space is going to be made available while creating the plot.

Assign a Family to the Sheep Farm

Manor Lords - Assign Family to the Sheep Farm

As usual, do not forget to assign a family to your Sheep Farm. One family will do and can maintain the herd easily.

Purchase the Sheepbreeding Development

Manor Lords - Sheepbreeding Development to Multiply Sheep

If you plan to pursue Sheep ranching, it is imperative to get the Sheepbreeding development. This allows the sheep to multiply so you do not have to rely on trading.

Sheepbreeding Development and How to Unlock

Get Your Starting Two Sheep

For you to start with your Sheep farm, you have to get Sheep and the only way is to export from a Livestock Trading Post. Once you've got both sheep, it's a matter of letting them multiply in your Pasture.

Trade Extra Sheep in the Trading Post

Once you have a good number of sheep due to breeding, you can then sell some extra Sheep for regional wealth. This is a good and easy way to get wealth passively.
