Militia Footmen Sidearms
Small Shields

Large Shields
Polearm Militia Polearms
Archer Militia Warbows

Militia can be formed once you have enough men and the requisite Military Resources in your settlement. To recruit a Militia, open the Army tab and click on the plus button. From there, you just have to select which type of Militia you want to add to your army.

Cannot Recruit Militia If Your Army Has 6 Units

As a note, there's a unit cap for the Militia, and you cannot recruit them if you already have 6 units in your army. Try to fill your army with Militia first so that you can expand your army with Retinue and Mercenaries later down the line.

Armour is not necessary to recruit Militia, but you'll need it if you want to upgrade them. Build the necessary backyard extensions so that you can produce these items and upgrade your units.

As a note, you'll need certain Developments to unlock the production of these armours, minus Gambesons. You'll need Basic, Advanced, and Master Armormaking to craft Helmets, Mail Armour, and Plate Armour respectively.

Manor Lords - Upgrade Burgage Plots
For your Militia to equip and upgrade their armor, they'll need to be living in a Level 3 Burgage Plot. Make sure to satisfy their needs so that you can upgrade their Burgage Plots, which will then upgrade their combat effectiveness.

How to Arm Your Militia

Weapons and Armors are Equipped Automatically

Your militia will arm themselves automatically, as long as you have enough resources, weapons, and armor in your settlement. Just remember that you'll need Level 3 Burgage Plots for your Militia to equip themselves with better armor, provided that you have it available.
