Before getting Artisan extensions, you need to upgrade your Burgage Plots to Level 2. To do this, complete the requirements needed to upgrade:
After completing the requirements, click on the Burgage Plot and press the upgrade icon.
How to Upgrade Your Burgage Plots
Getting the workshops or extensions for the families in your Burgage Plot will make them Artisans. Note that once this happens, they are permanently assigned and the backyard extension you chose cannot be changed.
Choose carefully or plot out more Burgage Plots and get more families to diversify your family artisans.

Artisan Extension allows families to create equipment for your militia. This will properly equip your units for war. Extensions will vary in costs, so make sure you have enough resources to add them.
