Type | Farming |
Can Be Moved? | No |
Description and Effects | |
A space to grow crops like Wheat, Flax & Barley.
To employ peasants on the fields, you need to build a Farmhouse. Note that larger fgields would yield more crops but would take longer to plow. Crops reduce the fertility of the land which can be mitigated by rotating crops or growing Fallow. All crops are harvested in September. All fields can be given a priority, which determines the order they are worked on. Unlocking the Fertilization development allows you to plant Fallow which can restore field fertility. |

The Field is the building that produces the crops of Manor Lords. The crops include Wheat, Flax, and Barley then Rye after unlocking the Rye Cultivation development.
Crop Rotation Guide: How to Maximize Fertility
Development | Description & Effect |
---|---|
Rye Cultivation | Unlocks a new crop: Rye. Similar to Wheat, it can be processed to Flour but can also grow in places with lower fertility.
Required Development: Orchardry |
Irrigation | Dramatically lowers the amount of damage caused by droughts.
Required Development: Orchardry |
Fertilization | Erects fences around fields. Allows to use Fallow fields as pasture to rapidly restore Fertility.
Required Development: Heavy Plow |
The field is considered as a flexible plot and can be built anywhere in your settlement. It is set by adjusting the four corners of a space into any shape you want.
Do note however that making fields bigger for higher yields would mean workers will take longer to sow the entire field so always balance production and planting efficiency!
The amount of crops you can harvest from a field depends on the Field's size, but fertility plays a major role in determining your yield as well.
Each crop has a different land fertility, which you can check via the overlays from the building menu. Make sure to construct Fields on green fertile land for the crop you want to grow!
How to Farm - Farming Guide and Building List
Aside from crop fertility, field size affects crop yield as well. Larger Fields produce more crops, but also take longer to plow, plant, and harvest.
Having extremely large fields with only a few families assigned could lead to them not finishing planting or harvesting on time, slowing down the entire process altogether.
While it is tempting to build one large field on fertile ground to maximize your yield, It is best to have multiple fields close together instead.
Having separate fields allow you to crops as needed, but most importantly it allows you to set some fields to fallow while your other Fields grow crops, to make sure you never bring your fertility to 0%.
While Fields do not cost anything to construct, you still need to construct a Farmhouse to assign Families to work on the Field.
If you have the Heavy Plow Development node unlocked, you can also assign Oxen through the Farmhouse to speed up Plowing and Harvesting.
Farmhouse - How to Build and Use
As you grow crops on your Fields, it will lose Fertility over time, gradually reducing your Yield with subsequent harvests. To recover Fertility, you must let your fields “rest” by setting them to Fallow.
Having multiple fields grow the same crop allows you to alternate between fields, ensuring that your Fields do not rapidly lose Fertility, while also ensuring that you are producing enough crops for your settlement.
Another way to restore fertility is through the Fertilization Development node. Unlocked after learning the Heavy Plow node, Fertility allows your Fallow Fields to be used as Pasture, and as livestock graze on your Field, it will also rapidly recover Fertility.
Unlocking this node is something more for developed settlements, since it requires Sheep or Lamb to graze the field, which is quite costly to obtain early on. Undeniably, the benefits are amazing, since Fertile Fields yield more crops, and having your Fields be used as Pastures makes it efficient for managing building space.
