Assassin's Creed Valhalla takes the historical stealth-action sandbox to the 9th Century, during the golden age of the Vikings. You play as Eivor Wolf-Kissed, a warrior from Norway, and due to the winds of fate, you, along with your blood-brother Sigurd, sail to England on your longship and create a new viking community there. Your fledgling village will need allies on all sides, which will see you either butting heads or working with various historical figures from the time, as is AC tradition.
Outside of that, there are a plethora of side quests, activities, and treasures to find. You can scour the land for new sets of armor and weapons, or take your Jomsvikings to raid and pillage settlements along the shoreline. You can hunt down members of the Order of the Ancients, the enemies of the Hidden Ones, by finding clues and tracking them down across all of England. There's always something to do in the world of AC Valhalla.
First off, the graphics look great. The people are well-designed, and the scenery is to die for. You can see the rolling green hills of England and iconic places like the Cliffs of Dover or the Westminster Church, and they look stunning. Viewpoints are always a treat as they show you the gorgeous scenery. However, a game is not all graphics. Let's delve deeper into the game.
While there is undoubtedly going to be some stealth due to the origin of Assassin's Creed, they seem to have foregone it for more RPG combat elements. They maintained their levelling system from Origins and Odyssey, favoring a more RPG approach to the game that locks you out of certain areas with too high a power level.
Their levelling system also has a lot of depth to it, with passive skills that you can get from levelling up
your character in a tree-like progression system. Adding to this is an array of active abilities that can be unlocked via quests or finding them in the world.
They called this time the Viking Expansion, where vikings would sail out to find new lands and explore territories unknown to them. Fittingly, there's so much to explore in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. There's always a new settlement that could use plundering, a new piece of gear that could be found, a new mystery to be solved.
If you're a completionist, you won't find a lack of things to do here. Due to the power leveled nature of the game, there's also incentive to find every treasure and solve every mystery in order to be able to reach the level for the next area.
The world and side stories of Assassin's Creed Valhalla are captivating. The main story is broken up into a series of arcs or sagas
. These sagas are short, sweet, and ultimately, more interesting than the overarching story. Sigurd and Eivor build investment purely by the time spent with them, whereas the various characters you meet in the sagas are interesting, if a bit one-note, and the twists are more entertaining in a smaller scale. While they tie in together nicely, we found ourselves enjoying the tales of Eivor and whoever was in the saga more than Eivor and Sigurd.
