The Barracks allows you to make your own Jomsviking, which other players can recruit for their crew if you're connected online. It's another way of earning silver.
Building the Blacksmith in your settlement allows you to enlist the help of Gunnar in improving your gear. In exchange for ingots that you can find throughout the world, you can increase the quality of your weapons and armor.
The Hidden Ones Bureau enables you to find and assassinate different Order members throughout the world.
Building Ayli's Trading Post gives you a place in your settlement to spend your hard earned silver. Things like Ingots, Arrows, and other weapons can be acquired here; you may also sell your trinkets here.
Rowan's Stable and Aviary offers you the ability to train your horse to be able to swim as well as have better health and stamina. You can also change the way your Raven and Horse look by talking to Rowan himself.

Like the Stable and Aviary, the Shipyard lets you change the appearance of your longship by making use of different designs you find throughout the world.
