+Atk and -Def

Jagen's best IVs are +Atk and -Def. With a superboon in Atk, Jagen gets +4 with a +Atk IV, which is a serious buff to his mediocre Atk stat. Since he really excels as a Res tank, we recommend taking the lowered Def stat so he can specialize in fighting magic attackers.

+Atk for a +10 Merge

If you are building a +10 merged Jage, we recommend a +Atk IV. His base Atk will grow to 34 with 10 merges and a +Atk IV, which will make him much better at offense.

Since Jagen is an older generation unit, he finds it hard to participate in the meta if he does not specialize in a specific niche. We recommend the Special Effect Refine for Veteran Lance

Jagen's exclusive weapon Veteran Lance makes Jagen even more adept at tanking magic attacks. With the special effect upgrade, he can further make use of his massive Res stat and inflict Atk-7 on foes who are adjacent to another foe and have a Res stat that is less than Jagen's by 3 or more. For teams that tend to stick together, this effect will be very good at reducing the amount of damage each foe can put out, as the number of units with higher Res than Jagen is pretty limited.

Jagen is a close physical attacker (range = 1). Therefore, when not accounting for the Weapon Triangle, the amount of damage he deals will be equivalent to his Atk minus the foe's Def stat. He also has the useful cavalry skill Fortify Cavalry, which can raise cavalry units' defenses, as well as the ever-powerful skill Fury.

Jagen Strengths

Amazing at tanking magic attacks

Jagen has a very high Res stat, and is great at tanking enemy magic attacks. This is especially true if the foe is a close magic attacker (dragon) because he can counterattack, so can come in pretty handy when he is up against an all dragon party.

Holds a powerful buff for allied cavalry

Jagen learns Fortify Cavalry by default, which is avery useful in cavalry teams. This skill grants Def/Res+6 to adjacent cavalry at the start of a turn, and the effect will last the entire turn. Granting this bonus to an ally before they run to the front lines of combat will help them reduce the overall damage they take.

Jagen Weaknesses

Struggles against physical attacks

Jagen has a pretty mediocre base Def stat of only 25, so he will struggle a bit against physical attackers. His Spd stat is only 24, so he has to take a lot of follow-up attacks, so a speedy physical attacker can take him out pretty easily. When he is not up against a red unit that he has triangle advantage on, leave the physical attackers to your party's other allies.

Poor offensive capability

Jagen's Atk stat is also nothing special, and other than Fury, he doesn't have much to help out with his poor offensive capability, making him not great at attacking. If you want to make the most of this unit, you will either need to invest in some stronger offensive skills and have allies buff him, or turn him into a full on support unit for your other cavalry allies.
