This page is about whether The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD for the Nintendo Switch is a Remake or Remaster. Read on to learn why this game is a Remaster as opposed to a Remake.

Is Skyward Sword HD a Remake?

Skyward Sword HD is a Remaster

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was originally released for the Nintendo Wii, and later ported to the Wii U. Recently, Nintendo announced that they would also be releasing Skyward Sword to the Nintendo Switch.

Skyward Sword HD is a remaster of the Wii game for the Nintendo Switch. It is not a remake, although it does offer a few changes from the original version.

Skyward Sword HD New Features and Changes

According to Nintendo, you can choose to use motion controls using Joy Cons similar to the original Wii version, or use the Right-thumbstick, offering a more conventional playstyle.

With this, you can expect a smoother and accessible gameplay for players who can't use motion controls for Skyward Sword HD.

What Makes Skyward Sword HD a Remaster?

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is a remaster as opposed to a remake as it simply an updated version of the original Wii game. It has enhanced graphics and a few features not present in the original, but the core gameplay, engine, and models remain the same in almost every other way.

Button-Only Controls

Zelda Skyward Sword HD - Button-Only Controls
A feature exclusive to Skyward Sword HD for the Nintendo Switch allows you to play the game using the traditional button control scheme.

Instead of using motion controls, you use the Right-thumbstick to swing your sword in a certain direction. This will hopefully make the game more appealing to a new player base, as this new mode of play removes the sword swinging motions done with your wrists, and instead allows for more accessible controls via your thumbs.

Amiibo Compatibilty

The game also allows you to use the new Zelda & Loftwing amiibo figure during gameplay. Using this amiibo allows you to fast travel between the sky and the surface.
