There are two ways to farm Ashes as you venture through the Underworld. Either through room rewards, purchasing at the Wretched Broker, or through Charon's Shop.
Going through rooms with the Ashes Icon guarantee that you will get Ashes as your reward for clearing the stage.
After unlocking the Wretched Broker, you can now buy Ashes in exchange for bones.
How to Farm Bones and How to Use
Ashes is used in performing Incantations by the Cauldron in the Crossroads. These can achieve several effects varying from unlocking merchants and tools, to enhancing healing mechanics, and even augmenting certain boon-related gameplay aspects.

Best Incantations to Get First
Ashes are also used to unlock Arcana Cards in your Altar of Ashes. These cards offer semi-permanent buffs that remain active as long as you have them equipped. The number of cards you can equip is determined by your Grasp.
