Polyphemus, the Cyclopean Shepherd, is the first boss of the Surface in Hades 2, appearing at the end of the City of Ephyra. Learn how to counter all of Polyphemus' attacks, and the easiest way to beat him.

Attack Polyphemus While He is Immobile

Hades 2 - Polyphemus Immobile

Polyphemus moves very slowly compared to the other enemies in game, so make sure to use this to your advantage.

Attack Polyphemus in between his attacks to ensure that you do not get hit by his shockwaves.

Time Your Dodges

Hades 2 - Dodge Shockwave

Polyphemus' shockwaves also move slowly, and is quite easy to dodge.

Once you see the shockwave moving towards you, dash towards the shockwave, since only the edges deal damage.

Familiarize Yourself With Polyphemus' Attacks

While having good Boons and additional HP or Armor definitely makes the fight easier, it all boils down to your ability to choose when to dodge and when to attack.

Polyphemus, like all the other enemies in this game have a wind-up animation before each attack, so time your dashes when you know an attack is coming to minimize the risk of getting hit.

Polyphemus Attacks and Counters


Leap Attack
Description:
Polyphemus leaps, and causes a shockwave when he lands.
How to Counter:
Sprint to the left or right, since the leap does damage mid-air and upon landing.

Ground Slam
Description:
Polyphemus slams the ground, dealing damage to anything near him.
How to Counter:
Dash away from Polyphemus' melee range.

Grab Attack
Description:
Polyphemus winds up and tries to grab Melinoe. If successful, Polyphemus deals continous damage for a few seconds. Polyphemus can also grab Sheep, causing him to regenerate HP.
How to Counter:
When the camera centers on Polyphemus, dash and sprint away.

Boulder Leap
Description:
Polyphemus grabs a boulder before jumping off-screen. Polyphemus then smashes the boulder near Melinoe, sending shockwaves in four different directions.
How to Counter:
Keep dashing and sprinting so that Polyphemus does not land on top of you directly.

Stomping Attack
Description:
Polyphemus stomps while walking forward, causing shockwaves to erupt with each step.
How to Counter:
Dash away from Polyphemus and wait for him to stop walking before approaching.

Shockwave Stomp
Description:
Polyphemus stomps forward, causing the ground to erupt in an arc in front of him..
How to Counter:
Dash towards the shockwave arc to avoid the damage.

Leap Attack can be Used Multiple Times

As the fight progresses, Polyphemus will start to leap multiple times, causing multiple shockwaves to erupt in succession.

When Polyphemus does this, wait for him to stop leaping, since the initial leap also causes damage.

Polyphemus Can Recover HP by Eating Sheep

Hades 2 - Polyphemus Eating Sheep

Once Polyphemus' HP starts to go down, he will occasionally grabbing Sheep to recover HP.

Polyphemus remains stationary during this time, making him an easy target for attacks. The Sheep do not take damage from Melinoe, and are just slightly shoved when attacked.
