The ending of Assassin's Creed Mirage cements Basim's origin story. Read on for the AC Mirage ending explained, the meaning of the ending, and to find out if there's a secret ending.
After the final confrontation between Roshan and Basim, Basim and Nehal open the Isu Temple, like what we've seen in previous games like Assassin's Creed III and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
There, Basim realizes that the temple is actually a prison with a sarcophagus at its center. Basim opens the sarcophagus and finds Nehal inside, after which a flashback occurs with the big twist of the finale.
The twist of AC Mirage is that Basim and Nehal are the same person. Nehal isn't real, as she only exists in the mind or as a projection of Basim. In reality, everything that Nehal did in the story was actually commited by Basim. Basim just externalized the experience to another person.
After the flashback, Nehal shows Basim a hologram via a memory seal to reveal that Basim is the reincarnation of the Isu Loki.
An apocalyptic event known as the Great Catastrophe threatened to destroy the Isu long ago. Loki's faction of the Isu, the Aesir, used the supercomputer Yggdrasil to store their consciousnesses in order to survive the apocalypse and be reborn into human bodies generations later.
The memory seal Nehal activates show the motif of duality: one between a prisoner and a torturer, as well as another between Basim and the Djinn that has been haunting his memories. These visions reveal to Basim his past life as the Isu Loki.
One memory seal shows Loki, as the prisoner, being abused by a jailer. This jailer can be assumed to be Odin, as the two depict the Isu version of the “Binding of Loki,” a myth from Norse Mythology where Loki was imprisoned and tortured for his role in the death of Baldur.
At the end of the sequence, Basim literally merges on-screen with Nehal, the former prisoner, indicating that Basim is reconciling with his Isu past as Loki. This we know both because of the final scene where Enikdu scratches Basim's face and flies off and due to Basim appearing in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla already as Loki.
This sets up the events that we know unfolded in Valhalla. Basim is sent by the Hidden Ones to assassinate a King in Norway, where he meets Eivor. Throughout the course of Valhalla, Loki (as Basim) discovers that Eivor is the reincarnation of his former jailer and abuser, Odin, so he seeks his revenge on him.
However, Eivor emerges victorious in the duel and imprisons Loki/Basim again in the Yggdrasil supercomputer.
AC Mirage has no secret ending or post-credits scene. You mainly unlock the ability to free roam Baghdad once again after the main story is over.
If you're curious about where Basim's story goes next, you can follow the story to Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, which Mirage is a prequel to.
