You can get the Needle Upgrade and increase Hornet's attack damage by talking to Pinmaster Plinney in Hollow Knight: Silksong. See how to obtain each Needle Upgrade, as well as the location of Pale Oil!

How to Upgrade the Needle
- 1st Upgrade: Talk to Pinmaster Plinney

Talk to Pinmaster Plinney After Defeating Widow

The Needle Upgrade can be obtained by talking to Pinmaster Plinney after freeing them from Widow after the boss fight. You can then find the Pinmaster in Bellhart where you can talk to them and ask to "sharpen Needle" for free. Getting this Needle Upgrade will increase Hornet's damage!
Start the Pinmaster's Oil for Futher Upgrades
After getting the first Needle Upgrade, speak to Pinmaster Plinney again to start the Wish titled Pinmaster's Oil. Return to Pinmaster Plinney after finding Pale Oils to further upgade the needle.
Find the Pale Oil in Choral Chambers
A Pale Oil can be found within the Whispering Vaults area of the Citadel. To reach it, start from the First Shrine Ventrica, and head southeast past Songclave into Whispering Vaults. From the large central room, head toward the left side of the room and find another large room near the center. From this room, head to the next room on the left.
In the next room, you'll have to hit the large platforms to move them so that you can make your way to the other side of the room. Once you make your way to the end of the path blocked by these platforms, you'll enter another room, where you can find the Pale Oil on the table.
Although you can unlock the second upgrade using the Pale Oil from the Great Taste of Pharloom Wish, we recommend getting the one in Choral Chambers first as there will be no tough fights along the way, and the upgrade will surely help you in completing the Wish for the next Pale Oil.
This upgrade will cost 500 Rosaries on top of the Pale Oil, so be sure to farm enough before returning to the Pinmaster.

Complete the Great Taste of Pharloom to Receive a Second Pale Oil

A second Pale oil can be found in the dining area of The Citadel, but it is kept by an NPC known as Loyal Mergwin. By talking with him you will initiate the Great Taste of Pharloom Wish, which will earn you another Pale Oil upon its completion. Like the previous upgrade, 500 Rosaries will also be needed for the third upgrade.

Complete the Ecstasy of the End Wish
The Ecstasy of the End is an Act 3 wish that can only be started after finding all of the missing fleas. Once the wish is accepted, you can challenge the flea caravan's mini-game and obtain a Pale Oil after completing all the challenges they present.

Find the Pinmaster in Shellwood During Act 3
In Act 3, Pinmaster Plinney will leave his home in Bellhart along with a message at his door, and you won't be able to upgrade the Needle using the Pale Oil you just got until he gets back.
Head to Shellwood and look for a path just to the left of the vertical section. Rescue the Pinmaster from the swarm of enemies and talk to him so he can return safely to his home. Once he's back at Bellhart, you can now get the final Needle upgrade at the cost of 680 Rosaries.
