1. Preparations

Static Compactor Crafting Tooltip

To find buried treasure, you will need to research and craft both a Handheld Resource Scanner, and a Static Compactor. They are found in the Exploration and Construction tabs of the Research Menu respectively.

You will use the former to scan the ground to look for treasure, while the latter is used to dig up the loot you find.

2. Locate and Unbury a Treasure

Buried Treasure Indicator
Using the Handheld Resource Scanner, scan the open sand until a Diamond Marker appears. This is your indicator for where the treasure is; hit that area with the Sand Compactor to find the treasure.
2 Using the Handheld Resource Scanner
You have to scan open sand, which means that you will be risking a Sandworm attack. To minimize the amount of attention you draw, turn off suspensors and shields on your character.

Potential Treasure Location
From testing, the above area of land yielded a buried treasure when being scanned. This area can be found northeast of the wreck of the Actaeon. Do note that this spot may not be a guaranteed spawn for treasure.
