Dune: Awakening

Sandworm Guide: Can You Ride or Kill It?

Add to Watchlist

Sandworm Guide
You cannot ride or kill sandworms in Dune: Awakening, as they are considered environmental hazards. Learn more about what sandworms are and how to deal with them in this guide!

What are Sandworms?

Giant Worms Native to Arrakis

Sandworm 2

Sandworms in Dune, also known as Shai-Hulud, are giant worms native to the planet of Arrakis. They come in different gargantuan sizes and are highly aggressive and territorial.

Interactive Map and List of Locations

Death by Sandworm

If a sandworm kills you, all your equipped items as well as the items you have in your bag will be permanently lost.

Hunting Patterns

Sandworms are mostly seen hunting alone. They are attracted to rhythmic sounds and will swallow any target whole. Their attraction to rhythmic sounds makes it easier to call or divert their attention through the use of a Thumper.

In the game, a UI will appear in the lower center of your screen, indicating the vibrations in the ground. You'll know a sandworm is nearby if the UI turns red and warps erratically. This UI is based on the vibrations on the ground, and not from your movements, although they contribute to it.

Escape by Going to Rock Formations or Flying

Sandworm Attack

If a sandworm is nearby, immediately run or drive to the closest rock formation to save yourself. Although sandworms are formidable, they cannot reach you in rock formations as they can only move through the desert seas.

Another option in the late game is to fly an Ornithopter to escape faster.

How to Get an Ornithopter Fast

Use Thumpers as a Distraction

When doing high-stakes activities like Spice Collection, consider using Thumpers to distract worms from your collector's presence. This allows you to collect as much spice as possible without interruptions.

How to Use Thumper

Why Are There No Sandworms?

Temporarily Disabled After a Bug

Before the server reset, Sandworms were unintentionally able to break player bases that were otherwise barred from them.

Due to this, the developers temporarily disabled them until the bug was fixed. However, they should be back in their terrifying glory after the server reset!

Can You Ride Sandworms?

Not Available at Launch

Creative Director Joel Bylos has confirmed that Sandworm Riding will not be available at launch. Although Bylos has acknowledged that sandworm riding is integral to the lore, as the people of Arrakis depend on it, he states that it isn't a priority in the game, as there are no requirements or dependencies for riding in the game.

Can You Kill Sandworms?

Sandworms are Invincible

Boyle also confirmed that Sandworms will be completely invincible, and that your only option when encountering one is to run. However, you can also use Thumpers to distract the sandworm from your footsteps.
