Al's left-side arts focus on his melee combo. This starts with Hawkeye to boost crit damage, followed by Offensive Stance to increase melee damage, and finishing off with Hercules Blow, which deals more damage when Al’s HP is low.
The downside of Offensive Stance is that it increases damage taken, making it a high-risk option. While it leaves Al vulnerable, it also helps lower his HP faster to increase the damage done by Hercules Blow. It can be swapped out for Samurai Soul, but Hercules Blow and other melee arts won't benefit much from it, except from the reduced secondary cooldown effect.
Al's art palette on the right are for his support arts and ranged damage starting with Eagle Eye to boost ranged damage, then use Sidewinder to deal damage and reduce enemy resistance to debuffs, and finish with Intercept for stun and damage. Howling Soul is used to further increase all allies' melee damage, ranged damage, potential, and can also revive a random ally.

Steel Flesh is viable for increasing Al's survivability, as he is kind of a glass cannon because he doesn't have any self-sustaining arts and relies on healers. Mighty Muscle boosts melee attacks, which synergizes well with his melee art combos. Grand Procession is used to provide TP for the whole party when activating Overdrive to give Al some support skills.
Grand Procession can be swapped out for Boosted Bullets to increase ranged attack damage, useful for his ranged arts and or if he switches to ranged attacks to maintain distance and avoid enemy aggro. Healing Touch has the ability to increase the HP of the revived party member when you use Howling Soul.

Best Role During Combat
Late-Game Best DPS with Minor Support
Al is arguably the best DPS in Xenoblade Chronicles X, however he is only recruitable in the epilogue (Chapter 13). Al is a glass-cannon unit, as he's capable of dealing very high damage with Hercules Blow, especially at low HP, but he does not have any sulf-sustaining arts to keep him on the field longer, except for Intercept's stunning capabilities.
His support ability is his other signature art, Howling Soul, which boosts allies' melee damage, ranged damage, potential, and also revives a random ally. The revive alone makes this art incredibly valuable, as it only costs 1000 TP compared to the usual 3000, but the caveat is that it revives a random ally. This will not be a problem though if there's only one incapacitated teammate.
