Xenoblade Chronicles X is best played at an exploratory pace. Most of the game's content revolves around exploring Mira and its regions.
Side missions like Basic Missions and Affinity Missions can give you useful rewards like data probes, materials, and even new party members.
Later Story Missions will be locked by how much of the planet you have explored via Survey Rate. So it is best to do side content as you progress.

Some of the missions have very specific objectives like an item that can only be gathered in the FrontierNav or beating enemies with a specific weapon.
Open the Missions screen, select your priority mission, and press ZR to check Details. This will show you what exactly the mission needs.

In Chapter 3, you will unlock the Follow Ball. It will create a path that leads you to your mission objective, if it is a location on the map. Press R and X to activate it when you tracking a mission.
However, it will sometimes lead you to take longer routes. Check your map as sometimes you can drop to a lower ground to get to your destination faster.

Affinity Missions are character-focused quests that unlocks new Arts, deepens character relationships, and, in some quests, unlock new party members.
Do them when they are available to strengthen your party and givem them new Arts. They also offer a decent amount of experience.

By Chapter 2, you can unlock the FrontierNav through the The Probe-fessional Walkthrough Side Mission.
This will let you passively earn credits and miranium through data probes in FrontierNav Sites or FN Sites. These are critical resources that you need for creating, developing, and upgrading your gear. It is also used for refueling and insuring your Skells.
You should change your data probe layout when you recieve new ones or when you find new FN Sites.

Miranium is a resource that is limited by how much you can carry it. Any extra miranium you produce will be wasted.
Use any extra miranium in the AM Terminal in Armory Alley. You can unlock new items in the shop by investing in Arms Manufacturers, create augments, and develop new gear.

The game's combat system is similar to a MMORPG where you must sequence your Arts and other actions in realtime. With additional mechanics like Soul Challenges, Quick Cooldown, and Overdrive, learning combat can be difficult.
To master it, learn every step one by one. By adding each step, you will eventually find the rhythm you want to play at.

Most enemies have an appendage—a part of their body—you can target by pressing A or Y while holding R. Some of them may take more damage than others.
Additionally, some of them have another HP bar that is also affected by damage.
When that HP bar is empty, the enemy will be stunned momentarily. For some, it may even disable one of their Arts. You may also recieve additional drops from them.

Your combat output is dependent on the stats of your gear. If you feel like you are not doing enough damage, consider changing your gear, upgrading its battle traits, or adding augments.

Another aspect of Xenoblade Chronicles X's combat is the customizability of how you want approach each fight such as your current party, Battle Commands, and even Soul Voice responses.
Since you can freely change classes and party members in between battles, you can experiment with character builds and party compositions.

Weather conditions don’t just change the atmosphere, they can also affect gameplay in various ways. Some weather effects boost attack power for certain elements, while others reduce accuracy, critical hit chance, or other combat stats.
Both players and enemies are affected by these buffs and debuffs, so adapting strategies based on the current weather is essential.

While exploring, you may accidentally encounter an enemy that has a much higher level than you. If it does not kill you in one attack, you can run away from them by sprinting away from them.
Otherwise, you can use Withdraw from the Battle Commands page. However, this will take 15 seconds to use.
