Several characters in Xenoblade Chronicles X can be recruited to join your party, each having their own unique set of abilities and backgrounds, all meant to help you during your exploration of Mira.
Most characters can be recruited as you play through the story missions, while some characters require you to meet certain criteria, such as completing Affinity Missions before being able to recruit them.
Best Characters Tier List and Party Members
DLC Characters from the JP Wii U Version are Included in the Definitive Edition
The DLC characters from the Japanese version of the game, H.B., Boze, Yelv, and Alexa, are already included in the Western release for Wii U, and the same applies to the definitive version on the Switch.
Definitive Edition Exclusive Characters
There are currently three new playable characters exclusive to the Definitive Edition on the Switch: Neilnail, Liesel, Ga Jiarg, and Al! Al is part of the Epilogue, new content exclusive for the definitive edition.

How Many Recruitable Characters are There?
22 Recruitable Characters
Aside from Cross, there are 22 Recruitable Characters that can join your party during certain points of the game.
Each recruitable character has their own requirement to be able to join your party, so make sure to accomplish them if you wish to recruit a specific character!
How to Recruit Characters
Progress Story Missions
A majority of the Recruitable Characters can be recruited into your party after completing specific Story Missions.
Some characters even join you during Story Missions, with the option to recruit them again after you complete the Mission!

Complete Affinity Missions
Some characters can only be recruited after completing Affinity Missions. Make sure to raise affinity with these characters in order to unlock their Affinity Missions and eventually recruit them!
