Classes help determine the skills, Arts, and weapons you can use in Xenoblade Chronicles X. Find out how to change classes, whether party member classes can be changed, and more!
List of Contents

To change your class in Xenoblade Chronicles X, you first need to Level Up Drifter to Rank 10.
After getting Drifter to Rank 10, three more classes will unlock so you can specialize further. You can switch classes freely from the Classes Menu in-game.

In Xenoblade Chronicles X, a character's class determines their usable weapons and what Battle Arts and Skills they can learn.
Every class has a different approach to combat determined by their Weapons, Arts, and Skills, though some classes have overlap.

The Drifter class is the Starting Class of Xenoblade Chronicles X, with all other classes stemming from it.
The Tier 1 classes branch out into more powerful and specialized Tier 2 Classes, which are upgraded into these are also called Tier 3 Classes (also sometimes called Master classes).
Advancing a Tier 3 Class to Rank 10 will unlock that class' weapons and arts for use with any other class. Before completing a master class, its weapons will be locked to its class tree
For example, if you want to use Rayguns while still being a Blast Fencer, you will need to level the Mastermind class to Rank 10.

The character classes of Xenoblade Chronicles X stem from their common root in the Drifter and branch out based on their differing approaches to combat specialization.
| Class | Description |
|---|---|
| Drifter Tier 0 |
The basic starting class, an all-rounder with a balanced variety of Arts. Has a high number of Skill slots, but no Skills of its own. |
| Striker Tier 1 |
A Tier 1 class that favors melee combat and tank-style play. It has high HP and durability-focused Arts and Skills. |
| Samurai Gunner Tier 2 |
A Tier 2 Striker evolution that doubles down on HP and melee attack bonuses, as well as area debuffs and damage Arts. |
| Shield Trooper Tier 2 |
A more tanking-focused Tier 2 take on the Striker with taunting Arts and defense buffs to protect the party. |
| Duelist Tier 3 |
The Tier 3 evolution of the Samurai Gunner, and focused entirely on melee offensive power. |
| Bastion Warrior Tier 3 |
The ultimate Tier 3 melee tank, with massive HP and defenseive buffs, as well as damage-boosting auras. |
| Commando Tier 1 |
A Tier 1 class that focuses on precise, swift attacks with a focus on advantageous positioning. |
| Winged Viper Tier 2 |
An highly accurate Tier 2 evolution of the Commando with even greater rewards for hitting enemies from their weakest sides at close range. |
| Partisan Eagle Tier 2 |
A more ranged Tier 2 Commando spin-off, able to hit enemies from a distance and debuffing them to set them up for melee combos. |
| Full Metal Jaguar Tier 3 |
A Tier 3 class that thrives in close-range, high-risk melee attacks, and does tremendous damage from the best angles. |
| Astral Crusader Tier 3 |
The ultimate Tier 3 ranged sniper class, able to buff their damage to great heights and debuff enemies from a safe distance. |
| Enforcer Tier 1 |
An excellent Tier 1 Support-focused class that can buff and heal allies and operate with a group at medium range. |
| Psycorruptor Tier 2 |
A debuffing-focused Tier 2 support class that can force enemies to go to sleep and protect allies with barriers. |
| Blast Fencer Tier 2 |
An energy weapon-focused Tier 2 class that can debuff enemies to make them even more vulnerable to energy damage. |
| Mastermind Tier 3 |
The master of debuffing at Tier 3, but can completely disable many enemies and make them easy prey for the party. |
| Galactic Knight Tier 3 |
A buffing and support-focused Tier 3 specialist, with powerful, wide-ranging support skills. |
Each class has a different specialty, with higher-tier classes often building or amplifying the combat style of the lower-tier ones.
Tailor your class choices to suit your party makeup and preferred playstyle.
The Drifter class has the most Skill Slots of all the character classes.
When you've mastered classes and unlocked their weapons for use across class lines, consider returning to Drifter and equipping your favorite skills to create powerful hybrid builds that mix Skills, Arts, and Weapons to maximum effect.

Only the player may change classes freely in Xenoblade Chronicles X. All other party members have a fixed class.
However, though they are more limited in terms of flexibility, party members can still advance their classes to Rank 20, compared to Rank 10 for the player.

sign beside the class name. These modifications usually include alternative weapon choices and skills.
For example, Doug's class is Blast Fencer+, which uses a Photon Saber for its melee weapon, like the default Blast Fencer. However, it uses a Raygun for its ranged weapon instead of the default Psycho Launcher.
