Pets can be acquired through basic missions after completing the Nine Lives Affinity mission in Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition. See a list of all the pets you can acquire as well as learn how to get cats and dogs around the barracks and what pets are for.

The affinity mission Nine Lives is what you need to complete to unlock pets for your game.
The quest will reward you with the Abyssinian cat as a pet and will provide the ability to acquire more pets through other missions.
Select Pets in BLADE Barracks Customization
To make acquired pets appear in the barracks, go to the customization center and select the pet option.
Check the Mission Board for Quests That Reward Pets
After completing the Nine Lives quest, Normal Missions titled Search Request will start to appear in the Mission Control. Complete these missions to acquire more pets including dogs.
If no mission that rewards a pet is available, complete any one first to refresh the list.

What are Pets for?
Barracks Decoration
When selected at the Customization Center, pets will appear around the barracks to liven up the place.
Unlocks Heart to Heart Events
Mechanically, pets serve a purpose by unlocking specific Heart-to-Heart events for different characters, meaning you can't trigger and progress through these events without completing the Nine Lives mission first and acquiring a pet.
Heart to hearts are conversations you can trigger by finding characters in certain locations at certain times to increase affinity.
