While you should definitely move on from Drifter in the early parts of the game to rank up other classes, it is still the best class to eventually go back to in late game.
The Drifter class allows you to equip any combination of weapons and skills that you have unlocked from other classes. In addition, it's the class that can equip the most number of skills.

Aside from having more skill slots than any other class, the ability to use all skills and weapons unlocked from other classes makes the Drifter class the most flexible as you can build it however you like in the later parts of the game.
However, make sure to move on from it and rank up other classes in early game as it won't be viable until you've unlocked and maxed other classes.

Regardless of their capabilities, these classes are considered C-tier, ultimately, due to their limited 3 skill slots. The restriction puts a low ceiling on how powerful you can build the classes.
