Note that not all combat mechanics are available immediately. They gradually unlock as you progress through the game's story.

Aside from choosing Arts that synergize well with each other and your team composition, It is recommended you equip at least one art of each color to allow you to activate all Soul Voices from your teammates.
Soul Voices are quick-time events (QTE) that when successfully activated provides different combat bonuses. Each character in your party has their own set of soul voices, and how they are triggered depends on whose it is.

Overdrive is an activatable mechanic with a duration that provides a lot of bonuses to your character and party. It can be triggered when you have accumulated 3000 TP, a combat resource that can be carried over to succeeding combat encounters.
If fighting a tough enemy, accumulate 3000 TP from weaker enemy first.

If you plan on using Overdrive on a tough enemy, make sure to save your Quick Cooldown until you activate Overdrive. This will allow you to increase your counter much faster and more efficiently.

Teammates by default are controlled by AI and may ignore any team synergy or combos you have planned. To capitalize on having a multi-member team, use the Battle Commands to give your teammates specific orders allowing you to coordinate attacks.

Aside from Battle Commands, you can find battle items on the same menu. These can be consumed during battle for certain effects. Make sure to utilize them when fighting tough enemies as they can give you the slight boost your team needs to defeat them.
Consumables can be acquired daily for free by joining any division.

Different attacks may apply different buffs and debuffs to either your team or enemies. While it can be a tall order, familiarizing yourself with these icons can help during combat such as activating ranged attacks when applied with a ranged attack buff.
List of Buffs, Debuffs, and Statuses

Topple is a status you can inflict on an enemy to stun them and deal increased damage with 100% accuracy. This can be the best time to throw everything you have or even activate Overdrive.
To inflict, you will need to activate an art with a stagger Effect, then another art with the Topple effect. Without the stagger, the ability of an art to topple, while still possible, becomes reliant on luck.

The current weather of your location can have a huge effect on a fight especially if there are multiple statuses being applied. Before confronting a tough enemy, see to it that the weather effects are in your favor and are buffs instead of debuffs.
Weather Guide: How to Change the Weather
There are a number of customizable systems in Xenoblade that can affect combat, so it's possible you might miss one. Make sure to explore the different screens and shops available in-game.

If you find yourself in a fight where you made a mistake that caused you your teammates' lives, you can run away and put some distance between you and the enemy to revive your teammates and retry the fight without being teleported to a data probe location that might be far away.

If you know you're fighting a tough enemy in a specific area where you can install data probes, if you have any available, you can install ones that provide combat bonuses such as the melee attack probe or ranged attack probe.
