To raise one of a character's Aptitude, you need to select a Legacy Umamusume who has the corresponding Spark.
If they have at least one ★, it will raise by one rank at the start of the Career. Any Aptitudes that will level up will be highlighted yellow in the Legacy Select screen. An Aptitude can only be raised up to A in this way.
To raise an Aptitude to S or increase it further, Aptitude Sparks will have to be activated randomly through mid-career Inspiration events.
Aptitude Guide (Track, Distance, Style)

To keep increasing a character's Aptitude to the next rank, or to raise it to a S rank you need 3★s for each successive rank up. So to raise a character's aptitude from D to A, as shown in the table above, you need a total of 7★s in all your Legacies' Sparks.
These Sparks have a chance of activating in the other two Inspiration events in a Career: Late Mar of Junior Year and Senior Year. These events will act as further bonuses to your initial aptitude. For example, having a Medium Spark activate from Inspiration will increase an A Medium to a S Medium.
With the right Legacy Umamusume and Sparks, you can get a character's Aptitude in anything to A. Find the best Legacy Umamusume for your next builds by checking out our Friend ID Sharing Board.
Legacy and Sparks Guide: Inheritance Explained

When a Trainee finishes a Career, they will create one Aptitude Spark of Inspiration with a random amount of ★s. It will be one of the character's Aptitude that is A or above.

You can influence what kind of Aptitude Spark your character can get through their Legacy Umamusume. If a character's Legacies both have a Medium Spark, there is a high chance that character will get a Medium Spark.

Aptitude is how well a character's peformance is for each track surfrace, distance, or racing style. The higher the Aptitude, the better their performance will be in that track condition or racing style.
If you want to build a character outside of their initial Aptitudes, try to raise their other Aptitudes to a minimum rank of B.
