Aptitudes Guide

Aptitudes refer to the ranks of your Character's proficiency in different running styles, distances, and track surfaces in Umamusume: Pretty Derby. Learn about track aptitudes, distance aptitudes, style aptitudes, how to raise aptitudes, and what benefits they provide.

All Aptitudes

Track Aptitudes

G1 Race.JBC Sprint – (Sprint) (Dirt)

Track Surface aptitudes concern Power on the two racecourse surfaces: Turf and Dirt. Majority of Characters have a set proficiency of A already on Turf, but only one (1), as of this writing, has a natural A aptitude on Dirt (Haru Urara) and some others with B aptitudes (such as El Condor Pasa).

Matching track aptitudes are important since any mismatch will cause your Umamusume to underperform. This can be seen in the example of Haru Urara in Arima Kinen, who tends to suffer and sit at the 16th for having a G in Turf (and also a G in Long) even with high stats across the board.

Distance Aptitudes

Sprint Mile Medium Long.
1000-1400m 1401-1800m 1801-2400m 2401m+

G1 Race.Sprinters Stakes – (Sprint)
G1 Race.Mile Championship – (Mile)
G1 Race.Takarazuka Kinen – (Medium)
◯ – G1 Race.Arima Kinen – (Long)

Track Distance aptitudes concern four (4) main track distances: Sprint, Mile, Medium, and Long. An Umamusume, for example, proficient in the Sprint category will be able to live to its full Speed potential.

Aside from the aptitude, distances have a lot to do with Stamina checks for Characters; whether your Umamusume will be able to complete them in 1st place will depend on how much stamina you have.

B rating (600) in Stamina is usually a safe number for Long races in a Career, with 400 being a doable minimum with recovery skills like Swinging Maestro.

Style Aptitudes

Front Runner Bursts forward at the start and tries maintain a lead at the front of the pack.
Pace Chaser Keeps pace with racers towards the front of the pack, sitting behind Front Runners.
Late Surger Stays towards the back of the pack early race, then builds towards the front from mid-late-race.
End Closer Stays at the back of the pack early-race, then engages with a burst of Speed and Power towards the front late-race.
Example

Compatible Skill Triggers:

Running Style aptitudes refer to the proficiences of four (4) running styles, namely: End Closer, Late Surger, Pace Chaser, and Front Runner. Running styles are the pacing strategies that characters take in a race, each pulling its values from different stats.

Like other aptitudes, an Umamusume with a matching aptitude to a set running style will show better performance compared to other lower-rank styles. More noticeably, being proficient in a certain running style will mean you have better use cases for skills that trigger only on that style.

How to Raise Aptitudes

Raise with Spark Legacies and Inspiration

Initial aptitude stats can be raised by one (1) grade for every 3-star Spark of that aptitude. For example, if you have Front Runner at C, it will be raised to B with one 3-star Front spark, and A if if you have two 3-star Front sparks.

They may also have a chance to be raised via the Inspiration events in a Career. These are RNG, and the chances of the raises being granted are higher the higher the parents' affinity is to the Trainee.
