The first step in this guide is to immediately remind you that min-maxing inheritance factors and making the perfect Veteran Umamusume is one of the endgame loops of Umamusume: Pretty Derby. It is not something you should worry about too much if you're new to the game.
Learn the mechanics first and slowly get into the gameplay feel! Once you have the right characters with good Sparks, you can start focusing on making Legacies.
Making legacies are essential primarily for three reasons:

The Legacy and Inheritance mechanics of the game, despite having concrete mechanics, will still have random factors that may affect the final result of your Trainee's gained stats. Don't be discouraged by the mechanic and eventually you will get the hang of training your character.

The endgame of this mechanic boils down looking at the affinity of the Trainee and the Legacies involved. The best Compatibility will be indicated with a ◎ so be on the lookout for this indicator!

Go to the Trainee Select screen first and choose an character to be the Trainee. This character, their stats, and their aptitudes will be featured on the center of the screen.

On the Legacy Select, look below the stat screen and fill in the two main family portraits below with different Legacy Umamusume, or, what the community calls, Parents. These Legacies will be responsible for the main stat boosts and skill hints your Trainee character will receive.
These Legacy Umamusume will also show the characters who served as their Legacy. These are called Sub-Legacies, also known as Grandparents.
A Trainee cannot be their own Legacy, but they can be their own Sub-Legacy.

You will notice that the Legacies have Sub-Legacies of their own and that a family tree of sorts will form as the Trainee's reference point.
What this means is that these six characters will be responsible for the stat upgrades that the Trainee will receive. All the bonuses will be dependent on their Sparks.

The characters used as Parents (Legacies) and the Grandparents (Sub-Legacies) will not be gone after doing this process. Train to your heart's content and use the Legacy with the best Sparks to get the best results!

After doing this, look at the Sparks Screen on the right or on the bottom-right for mobile. Sparks are the stats and skills earned by the Legacies and the Sub-Legacies you will use for the Trainee.
These Sparks will dictate the kind of stats and skills that could be gained by the Trainee. Their efficacies will depend on the number of ★'s the Sparks have.

Rent a Guest Legacy from your Friends for Monies. By borrowing your friend's character, they can get a Trainer Medal and Friend Points! If you are in the same Club as them, you will receive a Monies discount and they will receive Club Points.
The Guest Legacy you can rent depends on the Friends you have followed on your Friends List. There's a maximum of 15 Friend Follows per account start. You can increase that by buying Follow Slots at the Friend Point Exchange.

Check for the best Affinity of the Legacies by filtering the list by Affinity Bonus. On the Legacies List, click at the lower right of that tab. Then, under Sort By, click Affinity Bonus. The list will be sorted and show the Affinity you will get when you use that Legacy.
You can also use this option to sort out other qualities you want for the Legacies you will use for the Trainee.

Start the Training as soon as you have picked your Legacies and Sub-Legacies. Usually, you pick by finding the best Sparks you want for the Trainee. Hit Next on the Legacy Select screen and an Inspiration Event will happen.
Everytime an Inspiration Event occurs in Career, a Trainee will gain stats and hint levels for skills based on the Sparks of their Legacies.
You can then repeat the training process for other character until they become Legacy Umamusume themselves. Make sure to also set proper Support Cards since these will aid in creating better Sparks for future Legacies.

If a Legacy Umamusume is a Parent and a Grandparent of the other Legacy, their affinity may be improved. This will also be affected if the Legacy is already compatible with Trainee.

Inversely, having unique Legacies as a Trainee's Parent and Grandparents could also have a positive effect for their Affinity.

If a Trainee and a Veteran Umamusume have A on the same aptitudes, their affinity will also be raised.

Sometimes, their affinity can also be affected by story reasons. If you pair two classmates or dormmates together as a Trainee and Veteran Umamusume, their compatibility may improve.
You can check this information by clicking Profile on the Trainee screen.
Sparks of Inspiration are stats, skills, and aptitude a Veteran Umamusume can give to a Trainee. These are activated in three times: at the start of the Career and at Early April of the Classic and Senior Years.
At each event, your Trainee will gain stats and skills based on their Legacy's Sparks. They could also gain the Unique Skill of their Parents, should they have the appropriate Spark.
The more ★s a Spark has, the more likely it will be passed down to the Trainee.

There are two possible outcomes during an Inspiration event: gold or white. If the color of the glow during the Inspiration cutscene is gold, you will receive a higher amount of stats than if it were white.
When your Trainee finishes their Career, they become a Veteran Umamusume and have their Sparks decided.
Though it is mostly random, Sparks can be influenced by your Trainee's stats and the races they have completed.

Blue Sparks are stats that your Legacy can pass on to the Trainee. The more ★s the Spark has, the more stat bonuses they will receive.
During other Inspiration events, the Trainee can receive stats bonuses from the Sparks of their Legacies and Sub-Legacies.
A Veteran Umamusume can only have one of these Sparks.

Red Sparks can increase the aptitude of a specific Track, Distance, or Style. On the second or third Inspiration event, if the Spark activates, an aptitude can be raised to a S.
This means that, with the right Legacy Umamusume, most characters can get A in any Track, Distance, or Style. Try using different Legacies to change a character's build!
Just like blue Sparks, a Veteran Umamusume can only have one red Spark. They are more likely to receive a Spark from an aptitude they have an A on.

Taiki Shuttle (Wild Frontier) Rarity: SSR 3★ Dirt |

Maruzensky (Formula R) Rarity: SSR 2★ Mile |
Mihono Bourbon (MB-19890425) Rarity: SSR 1★ Dirt Total: 6★ | Dirt: D → B |
Taiki Shuttle (Wild Frontier) Rarity: SSR 3★ Sprint Total: 1★ | D → C |

Maruzensky (Formula R) Rarity: SSR ((3★ + 2★) + 1★) + 1★ = 7★ Dirt: D → Dirt: A |

Same characters can be part of a legacy so as long as they are not direct legacies to themselves.
To raise a Trainee's aptitude to the next grade the first time (ex. C → B), you need at least 1★ in their Legacies' Spark. Then, every time you need to raise it after that (ex. B → A), you need 3 more ★s in the Sparks of their Legacies and Sub-Legacies.
For example, Maruzensky has a D in their Dirt aptitude. To raise it to A, they need a combination of Legacies and Sub-Legacies whose total ★ count in their Dirt Sparks is 7 because they need go from D, to C, to B, then to A.
One Legacy can be enough to raise an aptitude from D to A. For example, a Veteran Haru Urara with a Dirt Spark of 3★ and whose Legacies each have a Dirt Spark with 2★ has a sum of 7★. If they were used as a Legacy, they can raise a character's Dirt aptitude from D to A.

Green Sparks are the Unique Skill of the Legacy Umamusume. Only 3★ characters can create this Spark during the end of their Career. If it is activated during an Inspiration event, the Trainee will receive hint levels for that skill.
Unlike the Trainee's Unique Skill, the borrowed Unique Skill cannot be leveled up during their Career.
If a Trainee's Legacies have this Spark, it will activate at Career Start. Then, for the next Inspiration events, their Legacies' and their Sub-Legacies' green Sparks have a chance to be activated.

| ○ Hint levels for Normal Skill | None |
Normal skills, those that are received from Support Card events, can also be passed down as white Sparks.
These are the skills that the Veteran Umamusume had when they were trainees.
These Sparks, in the Trainee's Legacies and Sub-Legacies, have a chance to activate during other Inspiration Events.

The last type of Sparks are from Races. They can either give stats or hint levels for normal skills.
These are obtained when a Veteran Umamusume, during their Career, won a specific race. Each major race event has their own Spark, which gives a specific bonus.
Just like the other white Sparks, these only activate during other Inspiration Events.
