Cause and Chances of Late Start
Around 20% Chance of Late Start
Late Starts will always have at around a 20% chance of happening. It is just one of the many things that can happen in a race, so it is best to accept that it does happen sometimes.
Maximum Wit Will Not Prevent It

The probability of a Late Start is the same for all characters, regardless of Wit score. A character with 1,200 Wit and a charcter with 300 Wit will have the same chance of a Late Start.

The impact of a Late Start can be reduced with the skill Focus and its upgraded version Concentration. They will only reduce the time your character will be delayed if they get a Late Start. They do not make your character start faster nor reduce their chances of a Late Start.
What is Late Start?
Random Status Effect at Race Start
Late Start is a status effect that can be gained by characters at the start of a race. They will have a slower start than the other racers, causing them trail behind the pack as the race continues.
This has about the same chance of happening to all the characters in a race. Their stats will not influence the probability of a Late Start.
An Uma Can Be Late Without a Notification
Late Start may not appear right away and can happen anytime as the gate opens. Once everyone starts accelerating, your character could trail behind immediately, indicating that it had a Late Start that was not identified as such.
How to Prevent Late Start

The only way to directly affect Late Start is through the skills: Focus and Concentration. These skills that decrease the time lost as a result of Late Start.
Characters such as Silence Suzuka (Innocent Silence) or Maruzensky (Formula R) can learn Focus during their Career.
Support Cards can also provide Focus through Training Hints or Career Events. Cards that provide these skills include Oguri Cap (Tracen Academy), Tazuna Hayakawa (Tracen Reception), and Mayano Top Gun (Cute + Cute= ?).
