Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined (DQ7)

Are There Random Encounters In Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined (DQ7)?

Add to Watchlist

Are there Random Encounters

Random encounters only happen while aboard the ship but not on land in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined (DQ7). Read on to learn more about how the game's encounter system works here!

Are There Random Encounters in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined?

Random Encounters Happen While on the Ship

Sailing in the Ocean

While the vast majority of encounters in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined are governed by the new system, one place random encounters do remain is when traveling by ship.

While moving between islands via the Hero's ship, random battles with seaborne enemies are possible. These encounters cannot be skipped, but they can be escaped with a Chimera Wing or similar skills.

How to Get a Ship

No Random Encounters on Land

Oddwood Slimes

Unlike the original release of Dragon Quest 7 on PS1 or its first remake on 3DS, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined does not have random encounters for battles on land.

Whether wandering around on the regional map or in a dungeon, the party will see enemies represented on the field and avoid or engage them at will.

New Features and Differences From the Original

Overworld Enemies Helps Control Pace

Temple Palace

Under the older games' random encounter system, battles could take unprepared players by surprise and prove a source of exciting tension. However, this can be inconvenient for players running low on healing items or MP. Older Dragon Quest games, including Dragon Quest 1 and 2 maintain the classic random encounters system.

Having enemies on the overworld as in more recent Dragon Quest games, including Dragon visible allows players greater control over how frequently they engage in battles. Players can even use the dash function to run past enemies and moves straight to the objective in many cases!

Skip Battles With Field Attacks

Field Attack

One additional benefit of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined's revised encounter system is the ability to skip a battle by hitting a low-level enemy on the field.

If the party's level is significantly higher than the enemy's the battle will conclude automatically and rewards will be given! It's a simple way to gain quick rewards from weak enemies!
