The Hero does not have a canon name in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined (DQ7). Check out the best protagonist names and know if the hero does have a canon name here.
List of Contents

The Protagonist of Dragon Quest 7 does not have a Canon name, even in the Original Game. It has been a long tradition in the Dragon Quest series for the protagonists to be the silent unnamed heroes.
| Name | Origin |
|---|---|
| Hero | The default name for all mainline Dragon Quest protagonists. |
| Arus | Name used in the promotional materials for DQ7 Reimagined. |
| Auster | Name used in previous versions and promotional materials. |
| Seven | Fan name to help differentiate each game's protagonists since they're all called Hero by default. |
Since the protagonists from every Dragon Quest game have no names, their default name is collectively Hero.
Though, at the start of the game, you will also be allowed to name the Hero, allowing you to name it after yourself for a more immersive experience.

Despite not having a Canon name, Square Enix used the name Arus in Promotion Materials for Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined.
However, Arus is by no means the definitive Canon name for the Protagonist since other names were also used in older Dragon Quest media.

In the Official 3DS webpage for Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, the Hero is referred to as Auster. This is also the name that was used in promo materials for the 3DS remake of the game.
Aside from the more official names above, Seven is also a name used by the larger community and fans of the series. This is because theyr're the Hero of the 7th game, and it's a lot easier than saying the Hero from DQ7.
| Steps to Change Hero's Name | |
|---|---|
| 1 | ![]() Go to the Settings Menu, Audio Settings and change the game's Text Language to something else other than your current one. |
| 2 | ![]() Save the game and quit. You will need to fully restart the game for the language change to take effect. |
| 3 | ![]() Load your latest save data, and you'll be prompted to change the Hero's name. You can input something random first. |
| 4 | ![]() Repeat steps 1 and 2, but change the language back to the one you were originally using. |
| 5 | ![]() Restart the game again, and you'll be back to your original language. From there, load the game again and you can now change the Hero's name to the one that you desire. |
If you wish to change the name of the Hero, you will need to go through a tedious process of changing the game's text language. This is because loading a save in a different language won't register your save's name, and the game will force you to change the Hero's name.

Arus is the most default and recurring name they've been using in a lot of Japan DQ promos I've seen. You could see it like John DQ or something in that sense. And it's not a unique name for DQ7 protagonist for sure. Auster in other hand is very unique. If you look at it in a Japanese way, it could read as アステア, Asteea (read Us-Tear) from DQ Emblem of Roto (Roto no Monshou) series from around 30 years ago. So Auster might be the origin of the name Asteea all along.
