Battle System Explained
Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined (DQ7) uses a turn based battle system for its combat. Read on to learn how combat works in the game so you can maximize your battle proficiency!

Battle System Mechanics

Turn Based Combat Encounters

Battle

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined makes use of a turn-based battle system, where each party member will have the chance to perform an action before switching to the opponent's turn.

During the player's turn, you can choose between four actions: Attack, Skills, Items, and Defend.

Attack will deal physical damage to the enemy. Skills allows you to use special actions which use MP. These actions range between Magic Attacks, Buffs, Debuffs, and Healing. Items will let you use an item from your inventory during battle. Defend raises your defense slightly for one turn and lets you take less damage from an attack.

How to Control Party Members During Battle

Attack Enemies Using Their Weaknesses

Vicious Hammerhood Weakness

Monsters are weak against certain attacks and skills. If you see a thumbs up appear over the enemy's name while hovering on a skill, that means the enemy is weak against that skill, and will suffer extra damage.

On the other hand, if you see a thumbs down, that means the enemy is resistant against the skill, and will take less damage to their HP.

Get Worked Up and Let Loose to Get Advantages in Battle

Maribel Let Loose

During combat, your character has the chance to get worked up when they either attack, take damage, or use skills. After getting worked up, an option will appear in your action screen to Loosen Up, which will unleash a unique Vocation effect that can change the tide of battle.

How to Get Worked Up and Use Let Loose

Switch Party Members When HP is Low

Tactic

If a character is low on HP or MP, you can swap them out with a reserved character to prevent dead party members in your team.

You can change party members during battle through the Tactics menu. This option is only available after you have recruited more than four party members.

How to Change Party Members During Battle

Use Field Attacks to Strike Enemies Before Battle

Field Attacks
While in the overworld, you can hit enemies before they attack you to lower their HP and get the chance to strike first in battle. Try to use Field Attacks as often as possible to gain the advantage in combat.

Use Sudden Strikes to Defeat Enemies Without Battling Them

Sudden Strikes
If your party has a higher level than an enemy, Field Attacks will transform into Sudden Strikes where hitting enemies will instantly defeat them. This feature is especially helpful for farming EXP and Gold without consuming too much time.

Use Items and Skills to Cure Status Effects During Battle
