Performing Field Attacks on enemies weaker than you will result in Sudden Strikes in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined (DQ7). Find out what field attacks are and learn the conditions for performing sudden strikes here!

Field Attacks are a mechanic where you initiate combat by striking visible enemies with your weapon in the overworld. In Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, enemies appear directly on the map instead of spawning through random encounters.
Once you hit an enemy, the game transitions into a standard turn-based battle. This system replaces traditional random encounters and gives you control over when you engage in combat.

The only exception for Field Attacks is when traveling by ship between islands, where random encounters can still occur. Aside from sailing and boss battles, nearly all fights are triggered through Field Attacks.
How to Get a Ship

If your party greatly outlevels the enemies in a specific area, striking them may trigger a Sudden Strike which automatically defeats the enemy without entering the battle screen. You still receive EXP, Gold, and Vocational Proficiency as if you had fought normally.
List of All Enemies and Monsters

The Sudden Strike mechanic is especially useful when revisiting earlier regions or farming vocation proficiency efficiently without spending time in full battles.
How to Level Up Vocational Proficiency Fast

Sudden Strikes only occur when there is a large gap between your party’s strength and the enemy’s level. Simply being slightly stronger is not enough and you must noticeably outscale the enemies in that area.
If enemies can still survive multiple turns against you in normal combat, Sudden Strikes are unlikely to trigger.
If enemies charge toward you on the field, they are still confident enough to fight normally. However, if enemies begin running away upon seeing your party, it means you have surpassed them in strength.
At this point, striking them will typically result in an automatic victory through a Sudden Strike.
