The combat system in Digimon Story Time Stranger is turn-based, with allies and enemies taking turns alternatively, and the player choosing their Digimon's actions using the menu on the bottom-left corner of the screen.
The Speed (SPD) stat of your Digimon affects their placement on the turn order. A higher speed stat allows them to act consecutively, so it is one of the most important parameters to consider when training your Digimon.
Choosing the Change command to switch your battle member Digimon to a reserve member Digimon does not consume a turn. The switched out Digimon can immediately join the battle.
In addition, using Items and Cross Arts does not consume a turn, although you can only use 1 item once per turn.

Using the Change command allows you to switch out your current battle Digimon and switch in another Digimon from the Reserve Member slot.
This comes in handy if you need to switch to a Digimon that is strong against the enemy based on their Attributes.

You can use the Item command to heal a Digimon or cure them of any Status Abnormalities. This does not consume a turn, although you are limited to using 1 item per turn.

When you accumulate enough Critical Points (CP) in battle, you can activate a Cross Arts move. Cross Arts are powerful Agent Skills that can change the course of the battle, such as applying buffs or dealing massive damage to enemies.
You can get CP such as attacking an enemy Digimon and healing your allies, but attacking an enemy's weak point is the most recommended method as it can give you a large amount of Critical Points.
How to Get CP: Critical Points Explained

Guarding reduces the damage you receive until your next turn. This is useful in boss battles wherein the boss may go in a Charging state before unleashing a powerful attack.

When you defeat an enemy Digimon in battle, their Scan Rate will increase.
Increasing this allows you to convert the Digimon and add them to your party, so it is recommended to battle enemy Digimon instead of running away.

Press the R2/RT button to perform a DigiAttack on the field on an enemy Digimon to deal a preemptive strike.
DigiAttacks also have Attributes attached to them and will automatically use the battle member Digimon that is most effective against the enemy.
Using DigiAttacks does not consume SP, giving you an advantage when choosing to battle an enemy Digimon.
Note that the Battle Member Digimon can only DigiAttack enemies on the field. Reserve Members and Digimon in the Box cannot DigiAttack.

The most important thing to know in battle is to determine the enemy's Attribute and take advantage of its wewakness. Digimon have compatibility with each Attribute and Element and attacking their weak points can deal up to 3x (300%) damage.
Attributes and Elements Compatibility Guide

You can check the Attribute and Element of an enemy Digimon using the Analyze button. While on the field, press the Triangle/Y button to Analyze and press the R2/RT button to do so in battle.

When your HP or SP drops or if a Digimon gets KO'd, you can use the Items command to use a battle item to heal HP, SP, or revive a battle member. Using an item does not consume a turn, so feel free to use it if you are in a pinch.
However, note that items can only be used once per turn (per character action).
