| See the IV Checker for All Units | Trait Fruits—How to Change IVs |
When using an Ascendant Floret, we recommend getting the next superboon if it fits the hero. If not, consider what stat your hero needs most.
As a hero obtainable only through Grand Hero Battle, Gromell will always have neutral IVs by default. The only way to access IVs for this unit is through using Trait Fruits.
The best IVs for Gromell are +Def and -Spd. Def is Gromell's most important stat at base 49, raised to base 53 with a superboon. Def is also the basis for Bolt Axe's checks, making it the ideal stat to boost with boons.
Gromell's base 30 Spd, while not terrible, is in the middling terrirory where investing in it won't help against fast foes, and leaving it alone or lowering it won't change matchups against slow foes. Thus, it is the safest bane to take.

Note: Stats bonuses from skills are not taken into account.
Gromell is a close physical attacker (range = 1). Therefore, when not accounting for the Weapon Triangle, the amount of damage he deals will be equivalent to his Atk minus the foe's Def stat.
Gromell's exclusive weapon Bolt Axe has built-in adaptive damage and Distant Counter, allowing him to excel as a tank unit by retaliating against all foes while targeting their weaker defensive stat.
At the start of turns 1-3, Bolt Axe deals 10 damage to foes and allies within 3 columns centered on Gromell. This non-combat damage cannot be reduced and is a great way to soften enemies before combat, or even reduce their HP to be unable to meet certain thresholds.
However, it damaging allies as well can be detrimental, especially on turn 1 where Gromell is near his allies. To counteract this, bring a healing skill like Breath of Life 4 onto your team.
For all foes within 3 rows and 3 columns, Bolt Axe inflicts various penalties on them, giving them Atk/Def-5, having them take additional damage in combat and forcing them to suffer guaranteed follow-up attacks. This effect applying in a wide area allows Gromell to support his team even from far away, especially since you will be separating Gromell from his allies to avoid the non-combat damage effect.
In combat, Bolt Axe inflicts another Atk/Def penalty on his foe equal to 20% of his Def and grants Gromell bonus true damage and true damage reduction equal to 20% of his Def.
Finally, Bolt Axe grants Gromell access to Range:2 Style, allowing him to transition between being melee and ranged.
All in all, Bolt Axe is an incredibly stacked weapon. It being available on a free-to-play unit like Gromell is great for free-to-play or low spending players, giving them a hero they can easily merge up and remain competitive in PvP game modes.
As a flying unit, Gromell takes 1.5x damage from bows and weapons effective on flying units. Be sure to keep them out of the range of archers and leave them to other units.

Gromell has Brazen Atk/Def 3 and Flow Force 3 as inheritable options.
Unless you need Flow Force 3 fodder, we recommend merging Gromell instead, as he is quite a powerful free-to-play unit.

It sucks that the inheritance rating is only usually either 3, 4 or 5 stars (I've only ever seen either 3 or 5 stars, but I'm sure there's a 4 star somewhere) instead of using the full rating scale. This should be a 3 star if the entire scale is used, because flow force is rare & good on a free unit. In the 3 to 5 star scale, it should be 4 stars, tho, for that reason, IMO.
