The main way to obtain Stronghold Keys is by purchasing one from a Buy Station. They'll be in the Gear tab, marked as Stronghold Keycards. Each key costs $5000 so make sure you've saved up enough cash.
If you don't have enough cash, another way to get keys is by taking out one of the guards outside a Stronghold. Keep in mind there's no guarantee that they'll drop a key so you may have to take out multiple guards before a key drops. The key will appear in a blue glow when it drops.
You can also find a Stronghold Key when opening Loot Chests near Strongholds but there's also no guarantee that they'll contain a key.
A more dangerous of getting a key is to take out a squad of Operators that have one in their inventory. You can camp near a Stronghold until you spot a squad approaching it then engage in a gunfight with them. You'll need to be careful since this can backfire and cause you to lose your life.
Strongholds are buildings on the map that hold important rewards that can boost your ability to win. You'll need to be careful when entering these locations since they'll be filled with enemy AI and other Operators. These are marked on the map by a green castle icon.
While specific Stronghold locations will change for each match, their general areas will be the same. For example, there will almost always be a Stronghold in Al Braga Fortress, but the building it's in may differ for every game.
In Battle Royale, three Strongholds are activated in random locations on the map after the first time the circle collapses. The first team to reach a Stronghold will have to defuse a bomb before they can loot it for rewards. After the bomb is defused, the other two Strongholds will only require clearing enemies inside before they can be looted. Strongholds in BR do not have to be unlocked with a key.
Operators that complete Strongholds in Battle Royale are rewarded with Loadout Crates and a temporary UAV of the surrounding area.
In DMZ, all Strongholds will be immediately marked on your map upon the start of a match but you'll need to get a key to enter them. As previously mentioned, keys can be obtained from Buy Stations for $5000, or by looting enemies and chests.
While BR only has three Strongholds per match, DMZ will have multiple Strongholds in various sectors so you don't have to worry about not getting rewards.
Strongholds in DMZ will have an objective to complete before you can acquire the rewards, with the most common being to just clear out all enemies. However, you can also be required to open a safe with a drill or to find a piece of intel.
You'll have a better chance of clearing out a Stronghold if you enter as a squad. Multiple waves of enemies can be overwhelming so the back-up will be sorely needed, particularly when you get downed and are in need of help.
You can even split up and let a member enter from another door so that you can flank enemies. Once you're inside, however, it's best to stick together to provide necessary support at all times.
There will be several enemies using Riot Shields when you enter a Stronghold. They can be a nuisance especially if you can't find an angle to attack them from the side or behind. Throw grenades directly at them to easily take them out.
You can also try and aim at their feet as they walk since there will be brief gaps with each step they take.
Sieging Strongholds are tests of your durability due to the sheer number of forces you'll have to fight. You can increase your chances of survival by bringing Armor and Munitions Boxes since you might find yourself running low on armor or ammo as you fight through waves of enemies.
These are also helpful for your whole squad so that you don't have to drop gear from your own backpack in the middle of a fight.
Stronghold loot and rewards can be found in orange crates scattered throughout the building. The rewards can differ for each Stronghold you enter but they're always guaranteed to contain a Loadout Crate (for BR only). This is a huge boost since you not only get stronger guns but you also get the loadout's Perk Package.
