Mud naturally generates in Mangrove Swamps. They can be found in abundance here and you can easily gather plenty if needed.
How to Find the Mangrove Swamp
If you can't find a Mangrove Swamp, you can also use any type of Water Bottle to splash a Dirt block and turn it into Mud. This only works on Dirt, Coarse Dirt and Rooted Dirt.

If you place Mud on top of a block that has a Dripstone, the Mud will turn into Clay after a couple seconds.
Falling blocks such as Sand and Gravel will instanly turn into drops if they fall into mud.
If you want to easily collect drops, you can place a Hopper underneath Mud since it can take blocks even through Mud. This helps you transport resources immediately.

A variety of crops can be planted on Mud such as sugar cane, bamboo, saplings, and flowers. This can be useful for different types of farms, as hoppers can collect these crops and items on top of the Mud.
