By improving the relationship with the Merchant if they're your family, you can get better prices and more items for sale.
You can send Gil in order to improve your relationship with the Merchant.
You can find the Merchant's home in Tipa, your hometown. They are located in the first junction, their house is on the upper-left corner.
They will move in once you create a character with the Merchant Home Job.
