Bolting the gate gives a tactical advantage in the nearby battle stage, The Blade of House Meillet, by barring enemy reinforcements from deploying mid-battle and does not impact the story whatsoever.
This gate is west of Fort Longeraige and the battle stage The Blade of House Meillet.
Bolting the gate is recommended to prevent being overwhelmed by enemy units. Leaving it open allows Melisandre to call 4 enemy units as reinforcement once one of your units gets close to her.
Melisandre will react differently in a short cutscene regarding her reinforcements if you bolt the gate or not. Other than this short cutscene and the reinforcements, it does not do anything else or reward you for choosing one or the other option.
The reinforcements do not drop extra loot but can be defeated for EXP.
