For Chapter 7, it doesn't matter if you protect Roland. All you have to do is to NOT use the fire traps. If you give Roland up, you wont use the fire traps. Thus you can still get the golden ending.
You actually don't need to protect Roland. I gave him up, but made all the other choices correctly and got golden ending in my first playthrough.
